in community we trust
This November, we applaud and acknowledge the individuals and community partners who support Classical Tahoe Festival & Music Institute

The Classical Tahoe Music Institute, inaugurated in 2018, offered more than twenty music education and appreciation programs and events for the community and audience members, of all ages and abilities, to engage with music and musicians during the three-week summer festival.

In 2019, the Music Institute served 656 participants through classes and workshops for a total of 102 hours of music education - with the help of thirteen partner organizations and collaborations.
Join us in thanking Rita Whitaker-Haun for her work in two 2019 Music Institute programs: Music & Movement and Musikgarten
Rita is a professional cellist with 38 years teaching experience. Rita currently teaches General Music and Strings (preschool through grade five) for Washoe County School District at Incline Elementary School, and her program, "Music, November and Me" (birth to age five) in Truckee, Ca.

Through Classical Tahoe's partnership with North Lake Tahoe Boys & Girls Club, 35 student-club members, ages 2-9, participated in Music & Movement last summer. Rita's designed activities were inspired by the Classical Tahoe Family Orchestra Concert: All About the Piano and included listening, moving, reading, writing, and playing simple instruments.

Rita is a certified Musikgarten teacher. Last summer, Rita worked with local children and parents through the Musikgarten philosophy: "when music and movement are a natural, joyous part of childhood, children benefit greatly in many areas of life. Language development, self expression, memory skills, concentration, social interaction, fine motor skills, listening, problem solving, teamwork, goal setting, and coordination are all impacted by early music and movement education. What’s more, as a child learns to play music, other areas of development are positively influenced, such as, creativity, family bonding, self-esteem, self-confidence, and emotional development."  - Musikgarten.org

Testimonials for Musikgarten further illustrate the impact of Rita's work:

"Rita has made a huge difference in my daughter's life with both music and self-confidence."

"The class has influenced our perceptions of [our son's] development and encouraged us to try different things regarding his capacity for learning."

"My daughter is 9 months old. This is the first class I have done with her and she loved it! It was fun to see her interacting with Rita and the other kids/babies. She loved music and I could see her light up when she was in class. Rita is a baby whisperer and was able to interact individually with my baby when she is usually very clingy and shy. It was a wonderful experience!"
The Music Institute initiative for music education, appreciation, and community performances is made possible with generous support from the M.E.G Memorial Fund for Creative Arts.

Fidelio

Royal Opera House, London, England

March 1-17, 2020; Royal Opera House, London, England

"Beethoven’s only opera is a masterpiece, an uplifting story of risk and triumph. In this new production, conducted by Antonio Pappano, Jonas Kaufmann plays the political prisoner Florestan, and Lise Davidsen his wife Leonore (disguised as ‘Fidelio’) who daringly sets out to rescue him. Set in strong counterpoint are the ingredients of domestic intrigue, determined love and the cruelty of an oppressive regime. The music is transcendent throughout and includes the famous Act I Quartet, the Prisoners’ Chorus and Florestan’s impassioned Act II cry in the darkness and vision of hope. Tobias Kratzer’s new staging brings together the dark reality of the French Revolutionary ‘Terror’ and our own time to illuminate Fidelio’s inspiring message of shared humanity." - roh.org.uk

As a highly anticipated performance, "the majority of tickets were snapped up by members before they went on sale to the general public. The Royal Opera House said in a statement that a few hundred left of 13,000 seats were available when the general sale opened. This caused a rapid stir in the press. The music critics of both the Daily Mail and the Daily Telegraph argued that the public should have had more chances to buy tickets, before members snapped them up." - ClassicFM.com

According to the Royal Opera House, last-minute tickets to these sold out performances can be found on Friday Rush.
