Update; 1 December 2016

MK50 Green club Hoodies available now

Our home town Milton Keynes (City of Dreams!) is 50 years old in 2017 and we are excited to announce that Redway Runners will be joining forces with the MK50 project team to help celebrate this amazing birthday.

We will give you more details in the coming weeks but to start off the celebrations MK50 green hoodies are now available from the club store to show our support and wear with pride! And not only that - the club is keeping the price of these the same as the regular hoodies.

These limited edition versions will only be available during 2017 BUT you can order yours by 1st December to get it in time for Christmas - they'll make an excellent present! (subject to stock availability)

So come on everyone - what are you waiting for?!

Donations for MK Food Bank

Please remember we are collecting for the MK Foodbank so bring items to club runs or to the Christmas party and help others in Milton Keynes have a great Christmas - time is running out
--
This year again the club will be collecting for the Milton Keynes Food Bank, for those who are not as fortunate as us at Christmas in Milton Keynes, they tell us the items they really need are selection packs for the children (please make sure they are in date) and toiletries.

We will have a donation box at the entrance for the club Christmas party, and you can also leave donations with the run leads. We will collect to Monday 5 December

Social Evening at MK Lightning Ice Hockey – Saturday 21 January 2017

For the third year running we are organising a Redway Runner Social evening to watch the Milton Keynes Lightning ice hockey team.  The match is on Saturday 21 January 2017 versus the Guildford Flames.  The game starts at 7pm at the ice rink just behind “Argos” and “Toys R Us” near MK Central Station. MK Lightning are having an excellent season, being 2nd in the league at the time of writing.  Let’s see if we can beat the 135 who attended last year!

We have managed to get an excellent discount on ticket prices.  Adults will cost £10 (instead of the normal £15) and children under 16 years of age will be charged at £5 (instead of the normal £8.00).  Those who have never been to ice hockey before are in for an evening of a fast paced, hard hitting game with the odd fight here and there!  The game will be over at about 9.15pm.  There is a splendid bar and good food and beverage facilities.  We will all be seated in a block together which will add to the fun.

To book your seats please can you let Kevin Orchard (kevorchard@yahoo.com) know how many tickets you would like?  Bank transfers to Redway Runners account:
  • Sort code 301553
  • Number 42390360
  • Name; Redway Runners
(reference “ice hockey” please)

or a cheque (payable to 'Redway Runners') to Martin will secure your seats. Absolute closing date will be Wednesday 18 January at 5pm.

If anybody fancies it, we can skate for free after the game until 11pm, you just need to pay for skate hire on the night at £2.50 each.  For those not up for a bit of skating we will move over to Wetherspoons at 171 Midsummer Boulevard for a drink or two after the game.

Redway Runners Party - Friday night

Just a quick reminder that that Friday is Party night (2 December) Dust off your dancing shoes and glam up!

Festivities start from 7pm, and will include a free drink on arrival, we aim to get you sat down by 7.30pm please.

For those just coming to enjoy the bar and band please join us from 10pm.

Don’t forget we are collecting for MK Food Bank this year, so please bring your donations of Children’s selection boxes or toiletries along on the night.

Club Fees for 2017/2018

The committee have agreed the club fees for 2017/2018 club year and again we will be keeping membership at £5 - hopefully you will agree fantastic value for a whole year - renewals are not due till the 31 March.

640 is back at 6pm next week

Remember the club 640 run is back from next Tuesday at 6pm from David Lloyd barriers and led by Paul CJ - this run does not follow the format of many of the club runs, see note from Paul belwo:
--

The Redway Runners "640 Group" will be reconvening on Tuesday 6 December. Our first meet is 18:00 outside David Lloyd (Livingstone Dr, Milton Keynes MK15 0DL).

The format will be as before, and for those who haven't been before or want a reminder, it is thus: Very simple: We start at about the allotted time, run a mile at about 7 minute/mile pace and then aim for the next 3 at about 6:40 pace.

This run does not follow the standard 'Redway Runners' protocol: there is no tail runner, and no loop backs. It is intended for experienced runners who can look after themselves. Providing you let the run leader know of any problems that occur during the run, we will do our best to ensure your safety.

As in its previous incarnation I encourage members to seek out their own favourite runs with a view to leading their own routes for the group. I will always be the organiser and club representative (or 'club official') at these runs.

I look forward to seeing you all next Tuesday - Go 640!

Paul CJ

Free abdominal aortic aneurysm scan

Been asked to pass this on to you from club member Mike Boast - (seems to be something worthwhile but sorry have no knowledge about it)
----
If you are over 65, (I do not think I am alone in having achieved this milestone in Redway Runners) you can have a free abdominal aortic aneurysm scan. It seems as we age the Aorta walls can weaken allow the Aorta to swell and can rupture which is terminal.

Safe diameters are 1.5 cm to 1.9 cm. Above 2.0 cm you are at risk. I had a scan last week and fortunately my Aorta is 1.7 cm. Lots of information on the subject will be found on Google

To get a free scan telephone 01234 792207. You do not need any referral. It is carried out at several Health Centres in this area. I went to Wolverton and was in and out in twenty minutes.

Mike

Munnar Marathon

Been asked to pass this on by Christine, to people in case anyone fancy a bit of a different marathon for the future
--
Brand new marathon.
Can I ask my pals in running/training groups & clubs to share this please? I know it's probably too late for the marathon distance in Jan 2017 but maybe a 2018 diary date...the organiser is a great guy & I agreed to circulate this in the UK
— at Munnar, Kerela.

Hybrid Boot Camp

Takami from the club is just back from this Boot camp and is raving about it and asked to pass on info as other club members maybe interested. (No personal knowledge of this company)
---

I'm just back from a two week boot camp, and thought it was amazing; I'm just wondering if I could spread the word via Redway Runners - it's so close by in Northampton, and I can't believe the inches lost and fitness improvements after just one week. I'm just wondering if any other girlies (or guys) would be interested in knowing about it and they are doing 25% off over the Black Friday weekend.

I just can't recommend it enough and wanted to share the news of how good it is for any other runners wanting to shred some body fat   www.hybridbootcamp.co.uk (I'd even be brave enough to share before and after pictures) yikes ha ha

Social MK Biergarten

JUST 4 PLACES LEFT ON THE GUEST LIST

Great news, we have another social sorted - Club member Franzi has sorted for the MK Biergarten, Milton Keynes’ first (and so far only) micropub and bottle shop, to open its doors specially for club members (and guest) on on Tuesday the 20 December from 7pm to 10pm.

In German beer culture a Biergarten is a comfortable, friendly space and the MK Biergarten has a wide range of bottled and draft craft beer and cider both from the UK and further afield. They also sell soft drinks and wine by the bottle.

So a chance for a chat and drink with fellow club members before the Christmas break.

It is a fairly small pub, so we have a maximum number able to attend with room for up to 45 of us. So to limit numbers you will need to book a place, to book mail Martin at rr@redwayrunners.com

Do not delay in getting booked!

Beginners - it could be you!

Last Saturday our beginners groups graduated at parkrun, just some of the comments they made below:

  • 'Running is really hard, but much easier with a good group of people. Today was tough, but we made it and I did it in a good time for me! Thanks Annette Smyth for your help and support. See you all at step up!!!'
  • 'What a fantastic graduation!!! This has been a brilliant course and a great step into the world of running. I now have my first medal of many hopefully for my medal tree (although not official, but thanks kids!!). Hopefully see you all soon on our next runs!!!'
  • 'Annette thank you so much. Couldn't of done it without your encouragement and enthusiasm to believe we can do it. Thank you for seeing me in at the end! Well done everyone great graduation'
  • 'Thanks Richard Doherty for giving up your time with us beginners. At the beginning I was not sure I would make it all the way round without needing to stop but I did make it all the way round & it was great!! Thanks again.'
