The Bucks Cross Country Championships by ‘one old duffer’ again

On Saturday Neville and a small band of Redway Runners represented the club at the Country Champs - well done all - Neville's update below:
Following on from our success at the National Cross Country relays and the momentum that was gained by this, a group of hardy souls have entered the Southern Championships later in January for 15KM of lovely mud and hills in Parliament hill fields in London. To make sure that we prepared properly an intrepid 9 decided that entry needed to be made into the Bucks County cross country championships held at Stowe school.

The numbers looked good and we had managed to entice some ladies to enter in Julie and Abi and had a full complement of senior men to ensure a team placing. However, on the eve of the race we began dropping like flies, the instigator of the entry (who shall remain nameless but he has the only name with a Z in it) had failed to enter, his co-conspirators who both share the same first name beginning with J had actually entered but were conspicuous in their absence on the beckoning day.

On the day itself the eventual survivors of the challenge and those who braved the rain, mud and mist were Roger Hobbs , who turned up despite the most severe bout of manful ever witnessed, Aidy Maidment, Simon Read, Andrew Dodds and me, Neville Rowles. The course itself was challenging to say the least and if you were not going up you were going down and if there was any hint of a flat bit then it was pitched at a ridiculous sideways angle and as slippery as a slippy thing on a slippy day. The big spikes were dug out and warm up completed before the melee of the start.

Without making a meal of it, we were matched with the U20 men and the Over 60 and Over 70 class who all had to do less laps and two times fewer of the nasty hilly thing than us and so went charging off far too fast for my liking !!! I tried to keep Aidy, Simon and Andy in sight but then my glasses got misted up and I lost track of them in the distance (it was eyesight not energy or fitness levels !!) The end result was that Roger succumbed to the fever and had to take a rest for health reasons after bravely taking to the start line. The winner finished in 37.40 which is stupidly fast but I managed to crawl over the line in 61st with 52.02 for 11k out of 76 Bucks runners and 14th in the O50 group (there were more behind us but we only have the results for Bucks ) Andy did really well and pushed in at 39th position with 47.29 and included giving me superb encouragement as I attempted to climb the penultimate hill whilst he came down the other side, Simon came in 30th position and 44.43 and was 10th in the O40 category, far too good for me and Aidys result is as yet unknown as they have missed him off the list !!! We know he started and we know he finished, but he must have been too quick for the adjudicators!!!

Then onto the ladies’ race which true to form was longer than normal for ladies at 8K of uppy downy muddy stuff. Unluckily for them several junior races and a bunch of Senior men had taken off around the course before them and churned it up good and proper. We eventually had singular representation in the Senior ladies with only Abi failing to hear the words of warning expressed from the foolish men who had taken to the course. Abi battled with the elements and after experiencing the “fun” of Stowe has decided that an investment in a pair of spikes would be a wise idea!!! The ladies race was won in 31.07 with Abi finishing 14th overall in 36.56 and 6th in her age category. Some of you may know that Kassia was also running and she came in a fantastic 31st and 42.37.

Well done to all who took to the start line and braved the elements and mud, thank you to Julie and Kassia for their support in the mens race and also to Julie who has some fantastic pictures of us suffering during the race !! We will do it again, we will have a full complement next time And those that are running parliament hill who didn’t come along, oh boy are you in for a shock.

Social Evening at MK Lightning Ice Hockey

For the third year running we are organising a Redway Runner Social evening to watch the Milton Keynes Lightning ice hockey team.  The match is on Saturday 21 January 2017 versus the Guildford Flames.  The game starts at 7pm at the ice rink just behind “Argos” and “Toys R Us” near MK Central Station. MK Lightning are having an excellent season, being 2nd in the league at the time of writing.  Let’s see if we can beat the 135 who attended last year!
We have managed to get an excellent discount on ticket prices.  Adults will cost £10 (instead of the normal £15) and children under 16 years of age will be charged at £5 (instead of the normal £8.00).  Those who have never been to ice hockey before are in for an evening of a fast paced, hard hitting game with the odd fight here and there!  The game will be over at about 9.15pm.  There is a splendid bar and good food and beverage facilities.  We will all be seated in a block together which will add to the fun.
To book your seats please can you let Kevin Orchard ( know how many tickets you would like?  Bank transfers to Redway Runners account:
  • Sort code 301553
  • Number 42390360
  • Name; Redway Runners
(reference “ice hockey” please)

or a cheque (payable to 'Redway Runners') to Martin will secure your seats. Absolute closing date will be Wednesday 18 January at 5pm.

If anybody fancies it, we can skate for free after the game until 11pm, you just need to pay for skate hire on the night at £2.50 each.  For those not up for a bit of skating we will move over to Wetherspoons at 171 Midsummer Boulevard for a drink or two after the game.
