DLRR @ London Marathon Expo

If you are heading over to the London Marathon Expo on the 9th to 12th April (you do not need to be running the event, to look round this free running exhibition) then head over the the Sketchers stand as DLRR are on duty promoting the MK marathon and half and say hi - they would like to see some friendly faces depending on which day you go on who you will see, the probable line up is:

Our Abi is doing the Marathon des Sables

DLRR club member Abi Gooch is only off to do the biggest challenge of her life and probably one of the most physically challenging runs in the world with the Marathon Des Sables (MDS).
 
The Marathon des Sables (MdS, Marathon of the Sands, or Sahara Marathon) is a six-day, 251 km ultra-marathon, which is the equivalent of six regular marathons. The longest single stage is 91 km long.
 
This multiday race is held every year in southern Morocco, in the Sahara desert. It is considered the toughest foot race on Earth. The first event of the Marathon started in 1986.
 
It is like, running from London to Dover, deciding not to go to France after all, running back again in 120 degree heat with a backpack on and voices in your head talking about cold beer!
 
Abi travels out early April to take part in the challenge, this is where DLRR can help her – we can send her messages and she would really appreciate them as it might just be the only thing she has to look forward to at the end of each grueling day!
 
Her running number is 619, but will not know the tent number until she gets there. Details below of how to send the messages.
 
Abi is taking on the challenge of running for 7 days across the Sahara desert, covering 250km and raising funds for 2 charities: NDCS as her two nieces suffer with partial hearing loss and wear hearing aids due to a genetic disorder. The NDSC has been a great help and support to my brother and his family and aims to reduce barriers for children with hearing loss.

She will also be raising money for Willen Hospice as it is a local charity and has helped friends in the past (and the DLRR Charity of the year to 31 March 2014) and is a fantastic facility.

COMMUNICATION (details based on last year – we will update if there are any changes) 
AOI has a website so that your friends loved ones, sponsors and admirers can follow your progress each day. The address for this is www.marathondessables.com. Each day, the organisers list the day’s results with times and positions.
 
Messages can be sent to you on this site from 6 April until 11 April, but delivery cannot always be guaranteed.  In order to send a message, your friends/family will need to go to the www.marathondessables.com website and click on 'Ecrire anx Concurrents' (Write to Competitors).  There is a form for emails - name, surname and running (DOS) number will be required - without these, it will be impossible to locate you or deliver your emails!  We also advise you to ask your senders to include your name and running number (and tent number if known) in the message itself.

Great turn out from the club at the Oakley 20 mile race last Sunday, DLRR had the most runners from one club at the event.

Sorry for the long post but I just have to share a conversation I had with a Dunstable runner at 17 miles as I passed him looking a little tired!
Me: "well done, you ok?"
Bearded red man: "I'm good thanks, b...ut do you know what? Every single David Lloyd runner that has passed me has asked me if I'm ok! What an amazing running club and so kind and thoughtful!"
Me: "Ah thank you and you're welcome. I just know how nice it is to be asked if you're ok!"
Bearded red runner: "well you should be proud to be part of a club like that!"
Me: "oh I am!"
I'm proud to be part of! Go DLRR!

NSPCC MK Half - July

The NSPCC MK Half is on the 6 July we have been asked and are going to run a water station on the route Jenny from the club is going to manage it for us - she will be looking for helpers nearer the time.

At this event in the past we have run in costume  - Morphs, Green Lanterns with Olympic Torch in 2012 and as the DLRR band in 2013 - any sensible ideas for 2014??

Also asked about a code for the event - will let you know if manage to get one

Due to my availability, the next DLRR newsletter will go out a bit earlier next week on Tuesday the 1 April. The following week will probably be the Friday 11 April

Friday Run

Got to love the Friday run for a story, last Friday, not only did we run with a Fire Extinguisher and a Lighthouse but also with the legendary club member Paul Sutherland - doing his 7th marathon of 9 in nine days

Hello! I'm a friend of Kate, whom I only met during the Silverstone half marathon. I see she has already posted my message of thanks to your Facebook page (see text message), however I felt I should get in touch personally. I would like to say a huge thank you to your club members for their support during Sunday's Oakley 20. Further more to that, their support during the MK half on 9th March. I'm running the London marathon this year, and in the 3 short weeks I have known Kate she has proved herself to such an inspiring person. I'm thinking about entering the MK half on 5th May, but I will wait and see how London goes before I enter.

Thanks again and maybe one day I'll drive down from Norfolk and join you for a Sunday morning training session.

Car parking

Just a reminder that the car park near to David Lloyd is a pay and display car park and the traffic wardens do check even late at night.

Easter Family Fun run

Following the success of our last DLRR Family fun run we are planning another session for the Easter Half Term on Thursday 10th April at 11.00am. If the weather is good maybe a picnic as well.
Children must come with a DLRR member - who will be asked to sign a form before the start
Portia will again be leading the session that will last about an hour (plus hopefully the picnic). The session will have Easter and running theme and of course will be suitable for all.

OU Relay 2014

We have been advised of a change to the date of the OU Relay this year (Les Irvine Relay 2014) it is now Wednesday 30 April 2014 usually starts about 12.30.
Once have final details will start to get names for teams, etc - believe there will also be a £1 entry fee payable on the day - more to follow
Put the date in your diary - it is a great fun event and only 1.1 miles in a team of 4

Big Green parkrun MK

This Saturday March the 29th is the day that the first DLRR 'Improve Your 5K time' course reaches a climax with the runners undertaking the final hurdle and doing the parkrun, with a PB! so no better date than to have a big green parkrun.

So lets get as many DLRR runners along that day, wearing the green tees, as possible. They will run faster if they know a green tee is just ahead or behind!!

We will aim for a group photo in the mini bowl on the morning at 8.50

If anyone else can help with pacing on that day please let Graeme or Spencer know (or me and I will pass on)

DLRR Quiz Night Friday 28 March

Upstairs at David Lloyd, £2 per person payable on the night - open to DLRR Members and DLRR non-members
Teams of 4 people.  You don’t have to be in a team we will make teams on the night.
Raffle in aid of club charity of the year 'Willen Hospice' if you can donate a prize please let Martin, Debbie or Glenn know.

New Daytime Beginners Group

We have a new free daytime beginners course starting on the 3 April, this will be led by Tim and will be on Thursdays at 10.00am from the David Lloyd reception. week 1 is a welcome week with a run and week 2, 10 April, will be an introduction to DLRR and admin week
We realise the first week in during school holidays so no problems joining in week 2
This is ideal for anyone new to running or returning to running.
The runners will graduate at the free MK 5K parkrun on the 31 May

Round MK Relay

Round Milton Keynes Relay will take place on Sunday May 18th.Again this year Abi has agreed to organise the DLRR teams.
 
The event will be a 4 person (inc at least one lady) relay starting and finishing at Market Square Stony Stratford.

Teams will be started on a handicap basis with the slowest team going off first at approx. 9am. The intention is for all teams to finish close together
 
Last year they has a record 19 teams and hope to emulate that performance this year.

The legs are:
  • Leg 1 - 16K, Stony
  • Leg 2 - 5.43 miles, Barge Woolstones
  • Leg 3 - 9.61 miles, Brickhill
  • Leg 4 - 10K, Bottledump roundabout
If you are interested in being in a DLRR team please let Abi know by the 31 March (we need name, age on race day, expected time and any preference on which leg you would like to do). the club has decided to make this a key race and will meet the costs of entries for runners who are members of the club on race day - so no reason not to take part.

Normal Running Timetable

Monday
RUNNING CLUB - all standards - 3 or 4 miles, or the S p up group which does 2.7 miles at a gentle pace. Meet near the barrier entrance at 19.00 or if you are new at 18.50.
 
Tuesday
6 to 7 miles, approximately 9 minute/mile pace, meet reception 11.00 for a 60-75 minute run.
 
Wednesday
RUNNING CLUB - all standards - meet at 9.30 prompt in reception for a max 1 hour run (we mix up runs with Interval sessions or hills or a handicap run).
 
Thursday
Evening run or session work (hills, intervals or the handicap run) meet near the barriers at 19.00
 
Friday
10 miles, 9 minute/mile pace or faster, meet reception 9.30.
 
Saturday
parkrun *, 5k meet at the mini bowl at Willen Lake 9.00 - all standards - free event - should register before attending and bring the barcode, you can register your club as 'David Lloyd Redway Runners' even if you have not joined as it is a free event.
 
Sunday
Longer training runs, meet at 9.00 check the web site under 'Train' and ‘Sunday runs’ for details.
 
 
NON DAVID LLOYD MEMBERS MUST NOT PARK IN THE DAVID LLOYD CAR PARK
