MK Winter Half Marathon

Well it is Sunday (13 December) and it has been all sold out for a while and we have counted 177 listed as Redway Runners on the entry list - so going to be a lot of green out running.

The timetable for the day is:

9:40 - group photo near to the David Lloyd entrance

10:00 - race start

19:00 - meet at Wetherspoons with medals for post race drinks/celebrations (Spoons near V6), Dress code; Finishers tee

We do not have a Sunday run this Sunday - it is back the following week, with our special Sunday Christmas  hats run with the animals of Woburn

Monday morning Step Up/Coached is back

From Monday the 11 January, our Monday morning Step-Up/Coached sessions are back, meeting at 9.30am at David Lloyd reception - initially they will be led by Doug, we are hoping Portia will be back leading them again soon.

They will alternate each week between step up runs and coached sessions, suitable for all - these sessions will last maximum of one hour

Redway Runners Social Evening at MK Lightning Ice Hockey – 16 January 2016

Following last January’s successful social evening where over 120 Redway Runners enjoyed an MK Lightning ice hockey match we are organising another trip to the Milton Keynes Lightning ice hockey match on Saturday 16 January 2016.  The game starts at 19:00 and is against the Guildford Flame at the ice rink just behind “Argos” and “Toys R Us” near MK Central Station. MK Lightning are having a good season, being 2nd in the league at the time of writing.
We have managed to get an excellent discount on ticket prices.  Adults will cost £8.50 (instead of the normal £13.50) and children under 16 years of age will be charged at £4 (instead of the normal £7.00).  Those who have never been to ice hockey before are in for an evening of a fast paced, hard hitting game with the odd fight here and there!  The game will be over at about 9.15pm.  There is a splendid bar and good food and beverage facilities.  We will all be seated in a block together which will add to the fun.
To book your seats please can you let Kevin Orchard ( know how many tickets you would like?  Bank transfers to Redway Runners account:
  • Sort code 301553
  • Number 42390360
  • Name; Redway Runners
(reference “ice hockey” please)

or a cheque (payable to 'Redway Runners') to Martin will secure your seats. Absolute closing date will be Wednesday 13 January at 17:00.

If anybody fancies it, we are able to skate for free after the game until 11pm, you just need to pay for skate hire on the night at £2.50 each.  For those not up for a bit of skating we will move over to Wetherspoons at 171 Midsummer Boulevard for a drink or two after the game.

Please help with your time

Can you help club members Mike and Sara-Jane who run with us across the daytime and evening runs with this - what a heart touching opportunity to help improve other peoples lives
Myself and my wife, Sara-Jane King joined RR 6 months ago. My aim was to get my waistline to sub 36” for the first time in 22 years, Sara Jane’s aim was to run with the club to improve her Marathon time. Over the last 6 months and, in spite of numerous footballing injuries hampering me, (right knee, left knee, toes, shoulder, back, whole body) I have fallen in love with running (on some runs literally falling…… on my nose!) As a result I will be potentially winning the 2016 London Marathon (if around 30,000 runners do not turn up on the day) on behalf of the Haemophilia Society.
The Haemophilia Society is a charity very close to mine and Sara Jane’s hearts, as our 18 month son Henry is a severe Haemophiliac. Aptly, Haemophilia is also known as Christmas Disease and with an eye on our surname is closely linked to the Royal Family. Henry is a very special case, alongside being able to consume more food in one sitting than a small country in Europe, he is also only the third infant in the world on a revolutionary new treatment for the condition. By running the marathon we hope to raise much needed funds for research into the treatment of Haemophilia and improve the quality of lives of those who have the condition. If you would like to find out more please visit Alternatively you can follow my progress on
Waitrose at Oakrove, where like me, I see many a Redway Runner enjoying a ‘free’ cup of coffee, have kindly allowed me to bag pack for their customers on Xmas Eve to help raise money for our Marathon appeal.  Thus, if any of you kind hearted RR’s would like to spare a little bit of time to help out for this very special cause between 8am to 12pm please contact me on

We also ‘bag packed’ last year at Waitrose and all those who helped said what a great atmosphere there was
Thanks for reading.
Kind Regards
Mike King

While many of us will be traveling around Milton Keynes running the MK Winter Half, member Nicola Askwith will be starting a very different journey.  She’s getting married!
So Nicola, we all hope you have a fantastic day and a happy life together with your new husband - congrats from all at Redway Runners.

Portia at the awards

Last Friday night, Portia who coaches at the club was at the Bucks and MK Sports awards at Aylesbury for being nominated as Community Coach of the Year a great honour for her and the club, we asked Portia for her thoughts:

I am overwhelmed being shortlisted for Community Coach of the year award 2015. Despite not winning the award, being shortlisted in the final three is total achievement of which I am proud of thank you Redway Runners and Leap for supporting me. As a shortlisted candidate in the final three means I now join the list of elite sport facilitators in the county.
Our running club (RR) has a wonderful family feel catering for all abilities in running, our volunteer run leaders give up their time to help runners, especially Martin Lawrence rain or shine he is out to lead, his love for running is infectious it rubbed off on me.  The best part of my role as Club Coach is to share and follow my runners journey, from day one on a Beginners course, hearing comments like:- "I can't run", I"am too slow" to eventually running a 5k's 10k's 1/2 marathon's and full marathon. I love seeing my athletes using our running club Redway Runners as tool to reach their personal goals. Everyone is unique with the right metal strength, determination and training you can achieve anything. Lastly thank you to my friends who attended the event with me.
Keep Running. See you all soon.
