Update; 10 March 2016

Zero to Hero Programme 2016/17

Redway Runners are proud to announce the continuation of the Z2H project.
Our aim remains unchanged, we want to help “novice” runners become marathon runners.
This will be a simple and flexible programme that will make the most of existing resources within the club. The project will be led by Doug Yabsley & Stuart Woodruff. Additional support will come from Redway Runner Coaches, Run Leads and, most importantly, the many club members that have trodden the same path over the years.
So, have the recent marathons whetted your appetite to pull on those running shoes and work your way up to a marathon? Are you excited by the idea that “it could be you” but not really sure where to start? Is there a special charity in your life that you would love to support through running a marathon? Well, if so, we can help and we want to help!
Everyone has busy lives. However, although this plan will be carefully structured to deliver you to the start line of the MK Marathon in May 2017, it will be flexible enough to fit into your own lifestyle. The Training Schedule will follow these stages:
To prepare you for a successful marathon race day, the plan will include a number of races:

We are now looking for people to join the programme in April. There is no charge for joining. However, participants will be expected to pay for their own equipment (such as trainers, running gear and a GPS watch). There will also be race entry fees – Participants will complete 1 x parkrun, 1 x Club 10K, 1 x Half Marathon, 1 x 20 mile & of course the "Graduation Marathon".
We’re trying to keep things as simple as possible, and we’re keen to receive a wide range of applications, so we have kept the application criteria to a minimum:
  • You must be available between April 2016 & next years MK Marathon which will be held in May 2017.
  • You must be a "novice" runner. Applications are welcome from inexperienced Redway Runner members or non-members who are prepared to join the Redway Runners (RR).
  • You must be local and available to train regularly as part of the RR club activities.
  • You must be medically fit.
  • You must be happy to be involved in RR and MK Marathon Public Relations & always ready to represent RR favourably.
  • You must be happy to attend progress meetings, happy to interact with other members of your group and of course your mentors.
  • Qualities that we need from you will include:
1.     Determination;
2.     Dedication;
3.     Commitment;
4.     Reliability;
5.     Honesty;
6.     Facebook user;
7.     A sense of humour!
If you are interested in applying please send an e-mail to  by 1tst April 2016 telling us in a couple of paragraphs why you would like to take part in this exciting project. If you have any questions please contact Douglas Yabsley directly either via Facebook or email to the aforementioned –

Newport Pagnell Carnival can you help with the fun?

Newport carnival on 25 June this year has a sporting theme and we have been invited to participate with our own float.

We have a lorry and a driver lined up. All that we need now are some enthusiastic representatives from the club who want to join in and make it all happen.

Anyone interested, please get in touch with Doug at;

Round Milton Keynes Relay 2016

Sunday 22 May is the next running of the Round Milton Keynes Relay organised by Marshall Milton Keynes Athletics Club. The race is an annual event run around the 31 mile Milton Keynes boundary in 4 stages (legs) over various terrains. Normally run in May it has developed into a "fun" event with a prize giving and social gathering in the pub afterwards. The RMKR is an event that attracts entries from clubs and groups of athletes in Milton Keynes and the surrounding area. Two trophies are competed for - The Pat Graves Memorial Shield which is awarded to the team with the fastest "age Adjusted " time and to the fastest team overall.

The entry fee is just £10 for the team (£2.50 each)

The legs are as follows;

  • Stony Stratford to Woolstone 10 ish miles
  • Woolstone to Bow Brickhill 6 ish miles
  • Bow Brickhill to Bottledump roundabout 10 ish miles
  • Bottledump to Stony Stratford 6 ish miles

The routes are not marshaled or signed, so you need to do a reccy before hand. The start times are staggered, based on your estimated time so the idea is that all the teams finish around the same time.

If you would like to take part, send your name, dob, if you have a preferred leg or team mates and your estimated time to Abi and and make payment of  £2.50 to the club bank account:

Tiffany's journey

Always lovely when get positive feedback on the club and everything we try so hard to do - so it was great to get the update from Tiffany Spicer - well done and hopefully many more happy miles to come
Well what can I say . . . I am 40 and I completed my first ever running race today, a sub hour 10k and I am so happy!

When I was at school I was a good runner, 800m was my thing and I was second in the school, second I might add to Liz Talbot, who used to run with Paula Radcliff, who is now Liz Yelling . . .
On a special school day when Liz couldn’t run I was all ready to go but unfortunately not being a teaching favourite I was not asked to run and from then on I stuck up some fingers and became a full time rebel . . .
That was until last year . . . when I decided to combine my rebellious nature with relearning my love of running . . .
My neighbor took me to my first parkrun in January 2015 and I walked and jogged round somehow and knew then it had to be part of my life . . . however running solo was tough and my perseverance and confidence waned . . . the last few years had been tough and unsettling for me and had contained a certain amount of loss and I was wanting to restore my physical and mental strength, however not always knowing how to do so . . .
I watched my sister in law do a beginners running course with Redway Runners and I watched her come on leaps and bounds and I wanted in . . .

I did the beginners course with the Redway Runners a year ago (March 2015) and attended what I could and graduated in May 2015 which was the very first time I had run a full 5k. It was tough and I would not have achieved that without my Redway Running buddy Helen. I then left it a few months as I did not feel confident enough to join the next group up, Step Up, but eventually my curiosity overtook my nervousness and I managed a Monday evening Step Up group. I then did a few Monday evenings which soon became most Mondays which then became most Mondays and Thursdays and in December 2015 I even managed my first long Sunday run with the help of RR but especially Mike which was really tough but somehow I got round . . .

It is now 2016 and for the first time in many years I feel strong again and I am now a very regular attendee at Monday Social and Thursday Step Up and Sunday Club runs and I absolutely love it!!! I travel because I love the club, it’s inclusive and encouraging nature suits me . . . I was nervous about attending my first race this morning (poor sleep, a dicky tummy, and driving around MK getting lost) but when I saw the flurry of green t-shirts I was no longer lost . . . and I am now looking forward to my first half marathon in MK in May . . . I can’t thank you enough . . .

First Aid training for more Run leads

This year has seen us continue to invest in training for our run leads to ensure you have safe, professional and fun sessions to enjoy each week.

Tonight saw another batch of run leads go through a first aid course (with a running slant) - it looks like they had some fun along side the important stuff. Must stress that no runners were harmed despite appearances!

Well done all and thanks to Tim M for his expertise on the night

Redway Runners at Atlanta

Sports Massage

Been asked to pass this on to you

PS have no prior knowledge of this person so please use sensible precautions
I'm presently studying for a VTCT Level 3 Sports Massage qualification with and have recently completed my practical training. I am looking to recruit a few more willing volunteers for my course portfolio, so if you know of anyone who would be happy to receive a free sports massage in return for a little bit of form-filling and an hour or two of their time, I'd be grateful if you would let me know.

I'm all set up at home but can drop the couch into the back of the car and do home / club visits, if that's easier. I hold student membership of the Sports Massage Association, a current First Aid qualification and Public Liability & Professional Indemnity insurance - all of which I'm happy to evidence on request.

Thanks in anticipation.

Kind regards,

Adrian Smyth

Been asked to pass this on to you
I am writing to you on behalf of Freedom from Torture, a human rights charity providing support and care for survivors of torture in the UK. We have a range of running events available and wondered if Redway Runners might be interested in helping us gather interest for the Bupa London 10k run on the 30th May 2016. It was brilliant to read on your website about your running club and all your accomplishments. I would like to ask whether it would be possible, with your substantial number of members help us share interest about this charity run. We realise that you may have nominated charities that you work with but please do let us know if there is any scope for your members to take on a short challenge event in aid of survivors of torture. We would really welcome you sharing some information about our charity places for the Bupa London 10k. Freedom from Torture provides therapeutic care for survivors of torture in the UK. Please do visit our website if you would like more information about our work:
If you would be interested in sharing information regarding Bupa London 10k event for Freedom from Torture, please check event on our website, or reply to find out more.

Sports Relief events

Been asked to remind you about these events
It is less than 2 weeks until the MK Sport Relief Mile. I am organising this year’s event and I need a little help. I am aiming for 1,000+ runners and I need 60+ volunteer marshals.
To register to run please click – registration costs just £7 for adults and £3 for U16s. There are 1, 3 and 6 mile options on a circuit of Central Milton Keynes. On the day registration is good but signing up beforehand is much better!

Thank you so much and sorry to pester you.

Rather than try to get everyone's availability info via FB messages, we're trialing a system that collates everyone's responses for us. So if you're able to help out on either 12 or 19tMarch please go to .
Just add your name, tick the date(s) you can help and tick one of the 'Sub' boxes to give us an idea of your current parkrun time. This is just to help us with matching up buddies with beginners.
Hope this is all clear. If not message Glenn Dickinson.
Thanks in advance.
