Highland Cross

At the weekend Dario Colombo undertook the Highland Challenge - report below

On Saturday 20 June 2015 I had the privilege to run the Highland Cross. The Highland Cross is a 50 miles duathlon ( 20 miles on foot and 30 miles on the bike), from Kintail, through Glen Affric and Strathglass to Beauly.

The race is through scenic Scottish valleys and mountains, and most of it is cross county. It is a very local race, open to 250 teams of three, and upon invitation only. The buses left from Beauly at 6.45, and we were given a lift to the starting point. Two and a half hours later, we set off.

The only way was forward! The first half of the foot section is in a such remote location that, in case of emergency, competitors are airlifted out. It was very difficult to overtake competitors, given the very narrow walking path. Water stations were run by the mountain rescue team, who offered us water collected from surrounding waterfalls.

The second half of the foot section was on wider tracks, and I enjoyed the scenery of the lochs. Transition from foot to bike was, literally, in the middle of a field, but very well organised (the bikes get transported overnight from Inverness to transition). I have to look out for midges, which love me! The bike section was rolling, but, in all honesty, I struggled a bit.

But the cheering from the locals, who organised live bag pipe stations at the top of the two major climbs were up-lifting. I arrived in Beauly, and crossed the finishing line in 7hours and 45 minutes. Exhausted, but happy. And, as always, overwhelmed by the dedication of the 200+ volunteers who make the race running smoothly and take care of the immense logistical task.
