Squeaky Bone 2015

This year’s Squeaky Bone takes place in Clifton Reynes near Olney on Sunday 1 November at 10:00am.

Organised by Olney Runners, this 3.5 mile event is open to all ability levels, you just need to have four team members.  Each member runs the entire 3.5 mile cross-county route and then hands their Squeaky Bone baton to the next team member.  We have always had a good turnout for this fun event and hopefully we can muster up plenty of teams this year.

If you would like to take part please e-mail Kevin Orchard (kevorchard@yahoo.com) your name/date of birth and pay the £10.00 entry fee - by bank transfer referenced SB15 to the Redway Runners bank account;
  • Sort code 301553
  • Number 42390360
  • Name; Redway Runners
or by cheque payable to “Redway Runners”) by Thursday 15 October 2015.  We will then create the Redway Runners teams and make the entries direct with the organisers.

Redway Runners parkrun road trip

A number of people have asked about the clubs Halloween run that we did last year and all enjoyed - well we have decided to do it again but this year it will be a HalloGreen Eve run on Friday 30 October (more details later) - so perfect opportunity to do both events.

Club trip - Torbay

Last week we told you about the club trip to Torbay in June next year - Steve Scott has run the event and sent in the report below (many thanks) so if you fancy coming along more details at:
http://www.redwayrunners.com/events/club-trips/

----

I ran the Torbay Half Marathon in 2013 which was a cool overcast day. However, as you know June could be a scorcher.

The run from the green in Paignton involved two laps, along the coast road to Torquay Harbour and back. It's fairly undulating but completely on the tarmac as they closed all roads.

The start and finish is next to the beach which has a large green giving plenty of space for getting ready and chilling at the end.

I remember there was a multi storey car park nearby which required payment, but was reduced on the day for runners.

As for where to stay, there are plenty of places of course in Torquay or Paignton. If we stay in Torquay, as I did this weekend, it took me a good 40 mins to get to the Parke parkrun. It was easy to find and there was plenty of parking as it is held on National Trust property. Car park is £2, but at least it goes to the upkeep of the trust property.

There are toilets, but only one cubicle for men which may cause a problem should we boost their numbers by a few. However, a couple of hundred yards away in Bovey Tracey there are some public toilets which could be used prior to going to Parke.

Yesterday there were only 94 runners so plenty of room. The route Is mainly on a mud track which has plenty of trip hazards like rocks and tree roots so care must be taken. It was very muddy and wet so can be more like a cross country. Within a couple of hundred yards there is a very steep hill, or more like a cliff face, which nearly everyone had to walk up as it was too steep and slippery, but was only a short distance before it became a more gentle uphill run for about 1 km. The next 3 km was undulating, but gentle downhill, until we reached a cycle track which was dead straight and flat, before another steep sharp incline which again some had to walk up due to the steepness and slippery. The finish was a gentle uphill.

The majority of the run was under tree canopy, so although it was a cool overcast morning, it was  very warm as there was no breeze underneath.

A very tough parkrun which will add a minute or two on our normal time, depending on the underfoot conditions.

However, still very enjoyable

Steve
