Lead Negotiator Sees January Finish for Farm Bill

WASHINGTON — Congress could enact a new U.S. farm law that cuts food stamps for the poor and expands federally subsidized crop insurance in January if negotiators soon break a deadlock, the lawmaker overseeing the negotiations said on Tuesday.
Cuts in food stamps are the paramount issue for the farm bill, which is more than a year overdue.
Conservative Republicans want the largest cuts in a generation, $40 billion over 10 years. House Democrats solidly oppose any cuts. The sides continue to struggle for a compromise.

Statement from USDA Communications Director Matt Paul on Farm Bill Negotiations

WASHINGTON, December 5, 2013 - USDA Communications Director Matt Paul made the following statement today [Thursday]:
"Negotiations on Capitol Hill about the Farm Bill should continue until House and Senate leaders reach agreement on a comprehensive bill. Numerous members of both sides have indicated progress, and the country deserves continued work on this critical legislation."

USDA Conducting Irrigation Survey as Part of Census of Agriculture

USDA is conducting a survey to gain a better understanding of irrigation practices. The 2013 Farm and Ranch Irrigation Survey is conducted every five years and is a supplement to the USDA Census of Agriculture and that producers were asked to complete earlier this year. Although irrigation questions were asked on the Census form, this survey delves into more critical information about irrigation practices and helps USDA publish comprehensive information. Because this survey is part of the Census of Agriculture, U.S. law requires all those who receive it to respond by the Feb. 10, 2014, deadline.

Invite to Participate in Public Market Focus Groups

The City of Madison is in the early stages of developing a business plan for the Madison Public Market.  The vision is to create a dynamic, year-round destination for locally produced food and other products.   The next step in this process is to reach out to prospective vendors to gauge interest.
You are invited to share your thoughts with the City on this project.  There will be a series of focus groups with prospective farmer-vendors on Tuesday, December 10 at the Dane County UW-Extension Office at 5201 Fen Oak Drive in Madison.  There are three ways for food growers to participate:

  2. 11:00am – Wholesale farmer focus group geared toward farmers who need/want a wholesale location in the City
  3. 5:30pm – Open House for any prospective vendor, partner, or supplier with an interest in the Public Market project
You are welcome to attend any of these that interest you.  Please RSVP to Dan Kennelly, with the City of Madison by phone:  608.267.1968 or email: by Wednesday.  If you can’t make it on December 10 but you’re interested, please let Dan know and he can look for an alternative time.  Feel free to give Dan a call if you have any questions about the project.
