Message from Director

Hello! Stop by RMAC in September to browse our changing exhibitions or for a dynamic event, including two new exhibitions and the return of our Roswell Artist-in-Residence lectures. On Saturday, September 11, after a morning of creating big drawings in the courtyard as part of Second Saturdays, visit with Phillis Ideal and view her new exhibition Gestures and Geometries. On Friday, September 17, Roswell Artist-in-Residence Mikayla Patton will launch the return of our RAiR lecture series, presented in partnership with the Roswell Artist-in-Residence Foundation, followed by a reception for her exhibition Visitation

Finally, towards the end of the month, join us for Fiesta on the Patio, a fundraiser presented by the RMAC Foundation. It will be a festive evening in the courtyard filled with music, friends, and good times—all while supporting the museum's programs and special projects.

See you soon and be well,

Executive Director

Mikayla Patton | Visitation

Opens September 3
Join us for an in-person lecture on September 17

Visitation is the interaction between Mikayla Patton's current work and a beaded Lakota dress borrowed from the Museum's Aston Collection of the American West. She sees this dress as a relative, a story, stitched, and braided with intention. Every bead and every fringe is full of energy, similar to the vessels in her installation.

Mikayla Patton is an "off-rez," Oglala Lakota, and mixed media artist. She was born and raised on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota where her Lakota relatives' homelands surround the Paha Sapa (Black Hills). An in-person lecture at the Roswell Museum will be presented at 5:30 pm on Friday, September 17. Visit Patton's website to learn more about her work.

Gestures and Geometry: Abstract Paintings and Prints by Phillis Ideal

Opens September 11
Visit with the artist from 1-4 pm!

Phillis Ideal is a native New Mexican, born and raised in Roswell with her family-line tracing back to pioneers that came to New Mexico in the 1880s. Growing up in the desert—imprinted by the mystery of open space and the ever changing dynamic sky—combined with living thirty-six years in the crowded urban energy of New York City, defines her current works that juxtapose expansive gestural space and tightly packed collage areas.

Learn more about the artist and her work during a reception from 1-4 pm on Second Saturday, September 11, or visit the artist's website. Create action drawings inspired by Ideal's work during Second Saturday's GO BIG! activity from 10 am-1 pm.

Shows are presented Tuesdays through Saturdays at 1pm, 3pm and 5pm daily, and a bonus 7pm show on Fridays. The planetarium is closed Sundays and Mondays.
