WHAT'S NEW AT SASI

MESSAGE FROM CEO - KATH FERRY

It’s hard to believe that we are almost at the end of February, with the rather un-summerlike weather we’ve been having! Still, this climate is much better for the garden and for people getting out and about. I hope those of you following our Facebook page have been enjoying the multitude of activities and venues our clients have been visiting over the past month. I think I’ll join in, it looks like lots of fun!

At the end of February our Board and Executive conduct our regular annual review of how SASI is travelling and where we are in preparation for the NDIS. February also saw SASI gain our first NDIS participant so ‘this is where the rubber hits the road’ so to speak. We get to test all our NDIS preparation! We feel very confident we will be able to operate in the new NDIS environment and continue to provide high quality support to our participants (NDIS title for clients).

We recently held a competition to ‘Name the SASI frog.' Our little green friend joined us some time ago and, after much debate among the judges, we chose ‘Happy George.' The name was suggested by Malcolm, one of our Beachlynn clients. He was presented with a certificate and prize.

Malcolm was very excited by his success – as you can see by his photo!

Keep a look out for further NDIS information sessions coming to the regions. These will be rolled out this year.

Happy reading!

Cheers,

Kath

FEATURED STORY

ROUNDUP: SASI'S SUPER SUMMER FUN

SASI held 14 recreational activities as a part of our annual summer school holiday program.

The first activity to Collingwood Children's Farm took place on the 3rd of January. Our last activity to Village Cinemas concluded on the 20th of January. The programs were extremely successful and allowed us to provide respite and community access to over 45 families.

We try to provide a variety of activities to meet the interests and passions of the individuals who attend our programs.

Some examples of the activities which took place are:
  • Yarra Valley Heritage Railway
  • Imax and Melbourne Museum
  • Waves (swimming)
  • Fun Fields (amusement park)
  • Jason Coleman’s Ministry of Dance
  • Cape Schank Lighthouse
  • Queenscliff Ferry
  • Bounce (trampoling)
  • Yarra Valley Chocolaterie & Ice Creamery
  • Frankston Sandcastles
  • Bowling
  • Fish and Chips at Coronet Bay
As well as participating in fun activities, our clients were able to catch up and socialise. They mixed with old friends they had made on past outings. Two of our youngest clients are Declan and Matthew who are relatively new to our program. They formed a new friendship while out and about at Fun Fields.

BEACHLYNN

FOR THE LOVE OF WATER

SASI Beachlynn staff have introduced a Wednesday swimming program helping participants in wheelchairs access the new PARC at Frankston. Our staff have had to come up with some creative solutions to make this possible. But the smiles on the faces of Vicki and Troy tell it all - or almost all!

Troy said "I can walk...."

FRANKSTON

DINNER AT SUBWAY & SOME WELL-DESERVED RELAXATION

Danielle made a healthy choice and chose Subway for dinner, where she ordered a large wrap packed with salad. After a great day and full stomach it was time to relax on the couch, tucked in under a nice blanket.
VISIT TO DEVILBEND PARK

Peter enjoyed a 1:1 excursion with SASI staff on a sunny afternoon at Devilbend park. They took a long walk in the bush and spent time taking in nature and the beautiful scenery.

EASTLYNN

WORK, FOOD & MUSIC ADVENTURES

Top Left: Rebecca helping others with Meals On Wheels. Top Right: Tim enjoying a fruit smoothie.
Bottom Left: Tony enjoyed guitar lessons and music therapy. Bottom Right: Michael cooking healthy organic sweet potato cakes.

ASPENDALE

ACTION AT THE PIER & GARDEN TIME

The group have been taking advantage of the nice sunny days spending time outdoors. Joe and Cameron took a nice walk along Frankston Pier. The participants have also been having a ball gardening and jumping on trampolines.

CHELTENHAM

SUMMER TIME!

Stasi is helping clean up and doing her bit for the environment by recycling. The Cheltenham team prepare and enjoy healthy meals. Stasi is making her own choice of what to eat for dinner using pictures.

MORDIALLIC

MAKING JELLY!

Megan and David chose to make Jelly for their housemates to have with their Sunday Roast dinner. Following the instructions, they both had a fun time preparing the jelly. Megan opened the box and David emptied the jelly crystals into the bowl and poured the water. Megan gave it all a good steady stir and they left it to set.

They did a fantastic job. Great teamwork guys!

LANGWARRIN

BUSY BOYS' BUSINESS

February was a busy month at Langwarrin. Greg went to the movies and enjoyed a special breakfast.  Hayley, Amar and Jibu took Angelos and Greg to the beach and enjoyed a stunning day. Richard Garbett has been busy working hard doing his washing.

GIPPSLAND

HOT CHOCOLATE & CHIT CHAT

Everybody loves a great hot chocolate. The Gippy group enjoyed a day out at the mall and enjoyed a delicious hot chocolate each!
