I hope you had a nice turkey day and enjoyed the company of wonderful friends and family. I'm thankful for all of the awesome people and animals in my life. I'm also thankful that I'm not working in retail today. Be kind and patient while you shop and make the most of this beautiful day.

this wasn't appreciated

exclusive early offer

I thought that I was misremembering it but after checking my emails I confirmed my receipt of an early Black Friday offer back on October 30th. If I so desired I could access deals on TVs back then. The "huge sale" concept has certainly eroded over time. For a while there were actual door-busters. You had to wait in line and there were a limited amount of items. I've been to a few of those intense sales (on Thanksgiving night) and they are hectic. I also used to work in online marketing so I witnessed first hand the beginnings of cyber-Monday and giving Tuesday and the early savings.  "Sales are down and we need to make our numbers. Let's start our sale two weeks early and try and get to goal." I tried to argue about dilution and overkill and in the end, I stopped working in online commerce. If there's something I want to buy and it's close to November I'll occasionally wait knowing that it will be on sale. Similarly I've never made a purchase at a Michael's without a coupon. I've been taught to not accept full price. This year I don't really need anything so the day is opened up to family visiting instead.

If you are looking for gift ideas or places to shop here are a few suggestions. Not sure if there are mega-discounts but these are places I support:

- Buddy Chicago - This is an ongoing popup store in the Cultural Center that features a ton of affordable and giftable art, crafts and goods from Chicago. I have a few calendars available there. You can either stop in or shop online.
- Uprise - Your nephew wants a board. You want a shirt. Your partner wants to get some new Vans. This is the place. This is a Chicago institution.
- Quimbys - A great place to grab all the zines and comics and books you can handle. I saw that they have some sort of new 3 dimensional Chris Ware puzzle.
- Scattered Pictures - Jai Tanju just released this box set of zines from a ton of great artists and photographers.
- My store - For some reason I haven't updated this with any of the new thread pieces I have available. There's some shirts there. I love the art making part of art and don't care as much about the art selling. I am working on series of things specifically for people to hang in their homes but those are still in progress. I'm going to try my best to get it together in 2022.

Beyond these suggestions I'd recommend finding artists and craftspeople you like and focusing your spending there. I'd also urge you to support musicians you love. Buy a shirt or some songs on their bandcamp. I know the lack of touring and shows has hit them pretty hard.

One more thing, consider using the barrage of emails flooding your inbox as an opportunity for some deep cleaning. Today is the day to unsubscribe from communications you don't need to see. If you haven't opened it in the last 6 months you can get it out of your email. If in 3 months you need to visit that site to make a purchase you can find it again and start the cycle all over. I just unsubscribed from Austin Public Transit alerts.

Friend of the Week

No animal friend this week so I suggest you become a friend to someone else and give a little. Skate After School and Skate Like a Girl are both good causes. There are also a number of local museums and charities that could use your help. If you've ever thought about getting a membership take the plunge. If you can't give but still want to help consider donating your time.

If you would like your best furry friend, most delicate butterfly or snuggliest animal associate to be featured email me 3 pictures of them and I will do my best to try and capture their essence.

I wanted to keep it short this week because I know your inbox is going to be filled to the top. Again, take time to breathe, be patient, be polite.

If you ever miss an email or you see that it's Friday and no email has been delivered, you can always check out the archive link on the Serial Dispatch instagram. If you know anyone who might enjoy this weekly special delivery send them in that direction so they can see if they'd like to join the list. Let's make it happen.
