Featured artists for January Shannon Ross and Anna Harris
Gallery Calapooia welcomes new artist Shannon Ross
Gallery Calapooia is delighted to present the hand-built ceramic artwork of Shannon Ross, our newest member. Her imaginative hand-crafted vessels are both elegant and utilitarian, bringing a unique twist to functional household items. During the month of January, Shannon’s work will be featured along with the whimsical paintings of Anna Harris.
Shannon is a native Oregonian and recently moved to south Salem with her husband Rob, who is her biggest supporter, and her Boston Terrier, Dot. She has been doing ceramic work for over 30 years, first learning it in high school. Her degree in interior design contributed to her interest in the building and construction of her pieces, which she creates with mid-range firing clay. A mix of porcelain and 10% paper, this clay is stronger than porcelain alone. Even the thin parts of her pieces are sturdy, allowing her greater freedom in the design.
Shannon loves to make ceramics that bring elegance, sophistication, and merriment to the everyday. Her work shows many influences, from ornate Art Nouveau illustrations of flowers to paisley patterns. She incorporates details from the natural world and, inspired by elements like birds, plants and animals, gives each piece a life of its own. Her glazes, too, are unique. “I fire my pieces sometimes 3 or 4 times to get the right color or detail. I use glazes that are layered so that the pigments interact, giving depth and variation to the colors. I often challenge myself to develop unorthodox practices such as incorporating separate components like stone, shells, mineral specimens or fish skin, and attaching them after firing.”
Working with clay, Shannon finds that the details or forms often change along the way, and this adds to the adventure of creating. Each hand-built item is a truly one-of-a-kind creation, infused with levity, humor and character. Come join us in January to welcome Shannon Ross to our Gallery Calapooia family!
sees the natural world with a delightful, imaginative eye. Each of her acrylic paintings reflects her sense of humor, along with an uncanny understanding of the personality and character of her living subjects. You can’t help but smile when you look at Anna’s work, because each creature has a life of its own.
Anna does her paintings on a variety or surfaces, from canvas to unfinished wood, sometimes cutting out the figures or incorporating the bark edge or the woodgrain into the design so that the presentation, as well as the subject matter, is interesting. She involves us with her mystical menagerie by giving them period-appropriate costumes, musical instruments, tools or paintbrushes so the creatures often go a little beyond the animal world and step into ours.
