Featured Artists for August
Cindy Conder and Lori Garcy

"Born In Fire"

Artists Collaboration

Being an artist is mostly a solitary venture. Artists work alone in their studios thinking about, designing and making their art. Rarely do they get the opportunity to collaborate with other artists.

Cindy and Lori decided to take on the challenge of creating art together, combining Cindy’s glass pieces with Lori’s metal work. Both mediums have limitations that required both artists to be flexible. Lori asked Cindy to make pieces in a certain form and then created the metal sections. Both artists went back and forth making suggestions on how it could be better. Not all the suggestions would work because of the uniqueness of the glass and metal. The artists were challenged by the need to make sure the copper could be securely attached without damaging the glass.

As they were unable to heat or hammer the piece once the glass was in place, they needed to design each creation with great care. Cindy and Lori also wanted their collaborative collection to include artwork that could be displayed on a table or hung from the wall, another interesting challenge. This collaboration of two talents produced some beautiful and unique pieces, cooperatively designed and created to enhance the work of both artists.

Their first collection of pieces will be shown at Gallery Calapooia during the month of August. They hope to continue their collaboration in the future.

  Cindy Conder

Cindy has been working with kiln formed Fused glass for over 10 years. She feels that the interplay of color and light is beautifully expressed through glass because it provides opportunities for color, light, texture and movement.

Cindy is a member of The Fire and Light Glass Guild. For her, each piece of glass has its own intrinsic characteristics. Combining different types of glass, different textures and colors, provides an infinite pallet. Warm glass has a tendency to surprise, and what goes into the kiln is not what comes out. There is always something new to be learned and discovered with this fascinating medium.

Her newest work is featured in August along with Lori’s at Gallery Calapooia. Inspired by Lori’s copper sea creatures and flowers, Cindy has created some new flower and sea themed pieces especially for this feature show. Cindy will also display at Corvallis Fall Festival and OSU Holiday Market.

  Lori Garcy

Lori has worked with metals off and on for over 50 years. She has a degree in art with a metal fabrication focus but for 34 years worked in a different industry. It was only in 2003 when she decided to take early retirement that she was able to realize her dream of spending as much time as she wanted working in metals. She went back to school to bring her skills up to speed and received her Bench Jewelers Certificated from Revere Academy. During the last few years she has been able to study metal smithing with Brian Clarke in Ireland and take classes from Alan Revere, Tim McCreight, Trish McAleer, Chris Darway, Michael Goode, Charles Lewton-Brain and many others. She has had a great time learning from these fantastic artists.

Much of Lori’s inspirations come from nature. She enjoys creating metal sculptures and jewelry based on what she sees around her. Sea creatures, flowers, leaves and even bark on trees can be created from metal. She finds it fun to take a sheet of metal and form it from a flat surface into a three dimensional object.

Her work can be found in Albany at Gallery Calapooia and in Brownsvile at the Brownsville Art Center

Celebrating Our First Five Years

In July 2013 Gallery Calapooia opened for business in downtown Albany. The founding artists had these goals: to encourage the creation, showing, sale and appreciation of art in Albany and surrounding communities, to provide member artists with a supportive community, opportunities to share skills and resources, and a place to show and sell their work, and to promote art education and public art in the community.

Five years have flown by and we are getting ready to celebrate our first five years with a special exhibit and reception in September. Former gallery members are invited to submit art for our feature wall for an exhibit that will run Aug. 27 to Sept. 22.

A reception will be held 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 6. Beer, wine and refreshments will be available. You will have the opportunity to meet and visit with our founding artists as well as those who are currently active members of the cooperative.

We appreciate all who have helped us along the way. The support from the community has been critical to our success.

Please mark your calendars and plan to join us for the celebration on the first Friday in September.
