“Fantastically Peculiar Things”

PAINTER -  Anna Harris

Even after 37 years of creating various forms of art, Anna Harris still appreciates being an active student.  She enjoys learning new ways to mix design, symbolism, and media throughout her compositions. Her main area of focus is studying and personifying nature.  She believes nature contains the true extracts of life with its many textures and colors. Anna is a founding member of Gallery Calapooia. She attended both Oregon State University and Western Oregon University with a focus in both Art and Business.  She is thankful to have three tough, constructive, and motivational critics: her two daughters and husband, the true artists of the family.

CERAMICIST -  Shannon Ross

Shannon is a native Oregonian who has worked with Ceramics for over 30 years. She lives in South Salem with her husband, Rob, who is her biggest supporter and studio mate. Her Boston terrier, Dotty, also keeps her company in the studio. While she has experimented with different art mediums, Shannon’s primary focus is ceramics, which she first studied in high school.  Her degree in interior design contributes to her interest in building and constructing complex hand built ceramic pieces that are beautiful, sculptural and whimsical.
Shannon Ross - Ceramic Sculpture
She uses either porcelain or a clay mixture with 10% paper and grog, which is used to strengthen delicate parts. This paper clay mixture allows Shannon to have greater freedom in the creation of the intricate and detailed pieces she loves to create.
Shannon enjoys the freedom of firing pieces sometimes 3 or 4 times to get the right color or detail. She uses layered glazes, so the pigments interact, giving depth and lively, robust color.  Shannon sometimes challenge herself to develop unorthodox practices such as taking separate components (e.g. stone, shells, mineral specimens, fish skin) and attaching them after firing.  Since the details or forms of her ceramics develop and change during the creation process, each piece is truly one-of-a-kind.

For her newest body of work Shannon is enjoying a new approach: combining clay figurative pieces with antiques. In doing this she has incorporated elements of the unexpected and infused the narratives with mystery.  Having been a collector of antiques and “found objects” for many years, she has items waiting to be given a new life.  She has incorporated some of these interesting finds with imaginative ceramic animal figures to create surreal and playful forms.

Downtown Unwrapped
Gallery Has Artist-Made Holiday Stockings on Display

For the members of Gallery Calapooia, the Holiday Season started early with the annual Albany Downtown Association event – Downtown Unwrapped. This event usually occurs on the first Thursday of November. - this year on November 7. Downtown businesses participate by having their special Holiday windows wrapped with paper and then on that special night, the wrapping is taken off and the windows are revealed. There are often special events in the various businesses, sometimes strolling carolers, etc. NOTE: Because of logistics, we choose to leave our windows unwrapped, but we still participated. In fact our windows are still up and will be up through the Holidays.

Our Gallery chose to use artist-designed stockings as our display. People worked in many different types of media, both 2D and 3D. We have a ceramic boot, a polymer clay stocking, many different styles of painted and dyed canvas stockings, and a handmade felt stocking. There are wooden plaques with stocking motifs, and paintings with the theme of stockings. In case you are wondering, the stockings are for sale!

Albany Unwrapped - Wearable Art Trunk Show

As part of Albany Unwrapped, we decided to invite five artists who work in wearable art to share our space for the evening.  Thank you Rachel Murray, Nancy Bryant, Cris Kostol, Chris Seale and Marty Balogh for helping Gallery Calapooia kick off its Holiday Season. Gallery visitors that night enjoyed themselves and the Gallery members working during the event enjoyed themselves too. Be watching for future events that feature one or two mediums and possibly bring in other guest artists so we can continue the fun.
