UH offers experts on a variety of topics for hurricane season The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) predicts a near-normal Atlantic hurricane season this year, forecasting four to eight hurricanes. As you consider stories during hurricane season, which officially started June 1 and lasts until Nov. 30, be prepared with these resources from the University of Houston. These sources have expertise in a variety of topics related to storms - before, during and after.
UH students travel to Havana to study public health The summer starts in Havana, Cuba, for 18 University of Houston students. Their two-week study abroad experience will take them to the heart of Cuba to focus on public health. It's part of the UH Graduate College of Social Work's Latin American Study Abroad Initiative.

Sustainable Beauty Products
I've always loved makeup. At age 4, I constantly begged my grandmother to try on her Clinique lipstick. I was obsessed with LipSmackers in elementary school, and in high school, I was the official makeup guru. But as I got older, I realized the makeup products I used to make myself gorgeous actually did me more harm than good. I didn't want to give up my makeup, but I struggled to use products I knew were harmful. But then my mom, a licensed massage therapist, introduced me to the world of natural beauty.

Why Pride Matters For All of Us
I am a straight girl. I was boy-crazy from the beginning; my first crush was in preschool, on a boy who grabbed my hand in the Halloween bounce house. Through the years, I've openly expressed interest in dozens of guys, both celebrity and real-life. I'm not a fan of PDA, but kissing a boyfriend on the cheek or holding hands in public is no big deal to me. It wasn't until late high school that I realized what I'd been taking for granted was actually a privilege. A privilege many people don't have.

Advancing Women in STEM scholarship
The Advancing Women in STEM scholarship from Zenefits will award $6,000 to a current STEM college major demonstrating financial need. To be eligible, the student must be a woman, currently enrolled as a full-time college student in the United States, have completed at least one full academic year of college with a GPA of 3.0 or above, pursuing a degree related to science, technology, engineering or mathematics and have expressed financial need to achieve her goals. Applications are due by December 31, 2016.
Environmental Studies and Natural Science Scholarship Program
Each year, the Friends of Volo Bog offers a scholarship to eligible students pursuing natural science majors. To be eligible, the student must be either an incoming freshman or a current college student studying natural or environmental sciences. This $1,000 scholarship has a due date of March 31, 2017.
Sustainable Coog Series
The Sustainable Coog series recognizes University of Houston community members who live sustainably and/or contribute to social, economic or environmental sustainability. UH students, faculty, staff and alumni are encouraged to nominate themselves or others to be included in the series. Selected applicants will be featured in the UH sustainability blog, website and social media platforms. Winners will also receive a Sustainable Coog prize package. Submit the nomination form to be considered.
