Q&A: New manager of Office of Sustainability to pursue long-term goals

sarah kellyThe UH Office of Sustainability recently welcomed new program manager Sarah Kelly, a 2012 UH alumna who serves as the lead for all UH sustainability efforts and manages, plans and coordinates University-wide efforts.

The Cougar: How has the sustainability program at UH changed since your arrival?

Sarah Kelly: In the infancy of the program, we’re focused on educating the campus community about sustainability, assessing where UH sustainability currently stands and how we compare to other campuses, as well as building relationships with faculty, staff, students, on-campus departments and community groups to collaborate on projects that address sustainability problems.

Kiva room latest to receive energy-efficient LED lights
More lights on campus have been switched out to LED lamps, which will save the University of Houston energy and money. The latest switch took place in the Kiva room in Farish Hall. The 272 can lights in the lecture hall that had been using 150 watt bulbs were replaced with energy efficient and longer lasting 15 watt LED lamps

Executive director of Facilities Management named
Herman K. Taitt Jr. is the new executive director of UH Facilities Management. For the past seven years, Taitt has been leading the rebuilding efforts for the public school system in New Orleans following the widespread damage inflicted by Hurricane Katrina.

'What's Cooking Coogs' is back with a healthy spin
UH Dining Services and Student Housing and Residential Life will continue last year's tradition by continuing to host "What's Cooking Coogs," an interactive cooking show for campus residents.

– The Campus Community Garden has donated 690 pounds of produce to local food pantries since January 2014.
– As of October 2014, UH Facilities Management has installed 70 water bottle filling stations and has saved over 1 million bottles from entering the waste stream.
– UH Dining's reusable to-go program helps keep 90,000 Styrofoam boxes out of landfills each year.
