Healthy Living Hero: Green Therapy
When was the last time you stopped and smelled the roses – as in literally stopped and smelled the roses
in one of our beautiful parks across the region? If it’s been quite some time you may want to visit again soon, as immersing yourself in green spaces is incredibly good for your health.
Going to the park to walk the dog, play with the kids or exercise at an outdoor gym are some of the many ways parks help keep us active. Parks also help us connect with others at picnics, birthdays and community gardens. And a growing body of research is uncovering the many benefits parks and green spaces provide for our mental health.
Regular contact with parks and green spaces can help reduce stress, improve mood and even boost self-esteem. But these benefits are nothing new to the Japanese, who have been practicing shinrin-yoku
(or forest bathing) as a healthy lifestyle practice for over 30 years. And a growing number of doctors across the globe are writing ‘park prescriptions’ for their patients to improve their mental wellbeing.
If you haven’t visited a park recently, it’s time to turn over a new leaf and make a habit of spending time there. Parks Week
4-12 March provides over 50 activities to join, including Parklust tomorrow morning at Queens Park, Magical Parks, a Heart Foundation Walk and morning tea on 11 March, and the Parklust Health and Wellbeing Day on 12 March.
Get out into the great outdoors and celebrate parks with us during Parks Week (4-12 March). Kick off the week at Parklust from 7am to 9am on this Saturday 4 March, at Queens Park with a morning of walking / running, yoga and meditation (BYO yoga mat). Then during the week have a go at a range of activities on offer, including group fitness, parks of past, kids activities, magical parks, gardening, paws in parks and more. Click here to see everything on offer during Parks Week
Parks Week will close with the Parklust Health & Wellbeing Day event at Queens Park from 8am to 3pm on Sunday 12 March. Come along and join in drumming fitness, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, hula hooping, yoga, zumba and a range of other activities.
Have a go at one of the workshops on offer - create your own art, try your hand at calligraphy and hear about how positive psychology can enhance your mental wellbeing. Plus there's plenty for the kids to do with a jumping castle, inflatable soccer, and a kids in the garden workshop on offer.
Grab a coffee and a healthy bite to eat, and go for a wander to check out the many health and wellbeing stallholders. Click here to follow this event on Facebook

Recipe of the Month - Michela's Kale, Ricotta & Squash Omelette
- 2 large free range eggs
- 1 handful of fresh kale or frozen kale powder
- 2 tablespoons of ricotta cheese
- 150g roasted butternut squash
- Olive oil
- Parmesan cheese
- Whisk the eggs in a large bowl.
- If using fresh kale, tear it into a blender (use a hand-held stick blender, if you prefer) and blitz until fine.
- Add the kale and ricotta to the eggs and whisk again.
- Mash the squash with a fork, remove the skin, then add to the bowl.
- Preheat the grill to medium-high.
- Place a small non-stick frying pan on medium heat, drizzle with a little oil then pour in the mixture. Tilt the pan to spread out the mixture and form an even layer, then let it cook for 1 to 2 minutes, or until the sides start to bubble and get golden.
- Grate a fine layer of Parmesan over one half of the omelette, then pop it under the grill for 3 to 5 minutes, or until golden and cooked through.
- Once cooked, carefully remove the omelette to a board and portion it up, keeping the side with the Parmesan for toddlers and adults only.
