EMBRACING AUTUMN THE AYURVEDIC WAY

Autumn is dry, rough, windy, erratic, cool, subtle and mobile. These are all attributes of the Vata dosha, and because like increases like, Autumn is considered a classic Vata season.

To balance this heightened Vata we need to introduce some adjustments in our lifestyle to keep us balanced.

Considering the Ayurvedic principles that opposites balance, we need to introduce warmth, deep nourishment, oiliness, a sense of stability, routine and groundedness.

Some Simple Guidelines:

DIET
  • Favour warm nourishing foods like soups, stews and hearty grains.
  • Introduce more unctuous foods, like ghee, into your diet.
  • Use warm, stimulating spices like ginger, cardamom, cinnamon, cumin
  • and turmeric – add to your meals.
  • Minimise light, dry, cooling foods like salad, crackers, popcorn etc.

LIFESTYLE PRACTISES
Support Vata by establishing a regular daily routine. This grounds and stabilises your being.

Calm your nervous system and balance your energy with Abhyanaga (full body self-massage) with warm black seed sesame oil or our Vata pacifying oil.

Steam baths, steam-box treatments and humidifiers are beneficial at this time of year.

AUTUMN YOGA

The focus this season is on developing a calming and grounding practice to balance your Vata during the change of season.

Warm up slowly building up to standing and balancing postures like: mountain (tadasana), tree posture (vrksanana), triangle (trikonasana), Parsvokanasana, Warrior 1 & 2 (Virabhadasana 1 & 2), half-moon (adhachandrasana). These postures increase stability and strength.

Gentle inversions, like legs up the wall posture (viparita karani) and restorative poses, are also beneficial as they calm and quieten the mind (Vata increases restlessness in the mind).
