Lauren Gustus became Executive Editor of the nonprofit Salt Lake Tribune in the fall of 2020.
She previously worked for McClatchy as West Region Editor, overseeing 10 news organizations in Idaho, Washington and California, including the flagship Sacramento Bee.
Lauren has also served as an editor in Colorado, where her work on transparency contributed to a new law that facilitated greater access to public records, and in Reno, where her team was honored for its reporting on the historic housing crisis that deeply impacted Nevada.
Utah is a homecoming for Lauren, who met her husband while working as a reporter and young editor at The Tribune in the early 2000s. The couple and their two young sons enjoy camping, skiing and mountain biking.
Trip Jennings, New Mexico In Depth's executive director, is an award-winning veteran journalist who has worked at newspapers across the nation, including in California, Connecticut and Georgia. Besides working at the Albuquerque Journal and Santa Fe New Mexican, Jennings was part of a team that started the New Mexico Independent, an influential online newspaper.
Marcie Young Cancio
Marcie Young Cancio, executive director Amplify Utah and assistant professor at Salt Lake Community College
A veteran newspaper reporter, magazine editor and digital and television news executive, Marcie joined Salt Lake Community College as assistant professor of journalism and digital media in 2018 after nearly two decades in Washington, D.C., New York, North Carolina and California, where she worked as managing editor of multi-platform news for the ABC-owned station in San Francisco. A Salt Lake native, Marcie has also worked at KUTV 2News, Salt Lake magazine and the Economic Development Corporation of Utah. In July 2020, she founded Amplify Utah and serves as executive director. Marcie is a graduate of Utah State University and Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism.
Charlotte Fife-Jepperson is a founder of West View Media and Managing Editor of The West View, a newspaper that focuses on stories and issues relevant to Salt Lake City’s west side. She has performed basically all duties of the newspaper and has outlived several iterations of West View Media’s Board of Directors since the nonprofit was established in 2011.
She has served on the board of SPJ’s Utah Headliners for 3 years, and is ever learning to better navigate the nonprofit news world.
Erica Walz is owner and publisher of The Wayne & Garfield County Insider. She is also executive director of Corner Post, a newly established nonprofit media company covering land and cultural issues related to land, water, and resource management across the Colorado Plateau. Prior to purchasing The Insider in 2012, she had over 25 years experience working with nonprofits in Michigan, Washington, DC and California. Her current endeavors are to continue building a local, community-based newspaper as well as regional nonprofit journalism.
The panel will be moderated by Eric Peterson. Peterson is the founder of The Utah Investigative Journalism Project, the state’s only nonprofit dedicated to watchdog reporting. He is also President of the Board of the Utah Headliners Chapter for the Society of Professional Journalists.
