A Letter From The Principal

Dear PS 282 Park Slope Community,

As I meditate upon the two months since becoming 282’s Principal, I am so appreciative of the feedback from families, staff and community that have helped me better know the PS 282 community.  The insights from the anonymous survey responses, to calls and meetings with parents and staff have been terrific – I look forward to continuing the conversations!

This feedback has further deepened my commitment to ensure that 282’s work becomes more fully child-centered, learning-focused, and solution-oriented. These guiding principles will help us amplify our many strengths and more effectively address areas for growth.

Children’s learning is built upon a foundation of strong relationships and trust. Teachers will collaborate weekly both to strengthen teaching and learning and to bolster social emotional supports.  Our guidance team will work to forge a home-school connection and nurturing a school environment where everyone feels safe, accepted, and loved. We will continue to integrate social emotional learning, and embrace culturally responsive teaching practices.

Within a child-centered environment, teachers, staff, and community-based organizations will collaborate in building coherence across the curriculum. This will mean students are better able to make connections between what they learn and their daily lives.  Every child will have access to at least one experiential learning unit – from Tiny Scientists to our new Musical IQ partnership, and other pilot programs in the works.  We will continue to integrate progressive educational experiences – “Hands-on learning” – across classrooms.

The work of this year and beyond is not one I take lightly; for this reason, I will strive to remain solution-oriented through strengthening school to home communications. I will maintain my open-door policy, and will continue to provide a variety of ways for families to provide feedback, express concerns, or collaborate in making PS 282 the Park Slope School the premier elementary school in Brooklyn.

I’m looking forward to reaching out soon with details about the first days of school – especially to our incoming Pre-K and Kindergarten parents who are new to this wonderful community.

Thank you for your warm welcome and I cannot wait to work with you in elevating the voices of our amazing community!

Warmly,

Amy Rodriguez
