Leadership Award Presented at BCIT Awards Ceremony

BCFT Chair Felicia Loo with award winners Tracy Nguyen and Denis Akhnazarov and BCIT instructor Anne McCannel

BCFT supports UBC and BCIT students through several different awards annually.

Second year BCIT Food Technology students Denis Akhnazarov and Tracy Nguyen were presented with the Jack Phillips, Jerry Heddinger and BC Food Technologists Leadership Award at the BCIT awards ceremony in November. Denis and Tracy are second year BCIT Food Technology students who have been active on the BCFT executive.

The award was established in 2009 to recognize the long-standing contributions of Jack Phillips and Jerry Heddinger to BCFT and to the food industry.

We extend our congratulations to Tracy and Denis!

Words from our Award Recipients...

Dear BC Food Technologists,

As a recipient of the 2019 J. Phillips and J. Heddinger Leadership Award, I am writing to thank you for selecting me for this honour. I am deeply appreciative of your support and generosity in funding this scholarship.

I am in my second year in the Food Technology Program and look forward to developing my skills and contributions in quality assurance after graduation. Beyond the practicality of covering my educational expenses, this award will allow me to allot more time towards my studies and drive my enthusiasm to be a proactive student.

Thank you again for your generosity and continued support in recognizing past, present, and future students alike on the success metrics of engagement and leadership.

Sincerely,

Tracy Nguyen

Dear Award Donor,

I am writing to thank you for your generous BC Food Technologists, J. Phillips and J. Heddinger Leadership Award. I am happy and grateful, and I highly appreciate your decision to select me as the recipient of your scholarship.

By awarding me the BC Food Technologists, J. Phillips and J. Heddinger Leadership Award, you have lightened my financial burden which allows me to focus more on the most important aspect of school, learning. Your generosity has inspired me to help others and give back to the community. I hope one day I will be able to help students achieve their goals just as you have helped me.

Sincerely,

Denis Akhnazarov,
BCIT Food Technology Student

Event Re-Cap - BCFT Winter Social 2019: Dinner & Clay Workshop

On December 19th, 2019, BCFT held their Winter Social Event. The casual event was open for members and non-members to socialize and have a good time just as the holidays were approaching. In total, there were 16 participants - a mix of UBC and BCIT students, and industry professionals.

First, the attendees met a local pub called Legends for dinner. Over dinner, members socialized and shared experiences from the industry. After the holiday dinner, BCFT headed to the local Clay Craft workshop at 4CatStudio at the Richmond location. At the colourful studio, attendees were guided through a clay workshop that resulted in wonderful polar bear mugs. The engaging workshop was a good opportunity to relax and recharge after final exams or work. It was also a great way to express creativity and start the winter break.

Thank you to Leon Li for coordinating the event. Also, thank you to all the student members, professionals and BCFT executives for attending our Winter Social. We hope you had a fantastic time, and we were very happy to have you with us!

Make sure to check BCFT’s event page there’s always something interesting arranged by the executive group and you’ll be welcomed to join and celebrate with us during future occasions.
