JOIN VIRTUAL UNIVERSITY OF ARIZONA JOB FAIR
The ABA is partnering with the University of Arizona to offer member stations FREE access to a university-wide virtual career fair on Tuesday, September 15.

The fair will be hosted over Zoom and will allow stations to pre-select candidates to speak with (if they so choose). The ABA is covering all registration costs for a limited number of stations. If you are interested in joining this career fair, please send an email ASAP to info@azbroadcasters.org

ARIZONA MEDIA RESEARCH STUDY:
ABA TO FORM WORKING GROUP FOR FIELD STUDY
The ABA is actively building the framework for our first-ever research study of Arizona audience consumption habits. We know stations need more data to help close sales deals and paint a clear picture of LOCAL consumption patterns.

To help this effort, we're forming a working group of leaders to identify the specific data needs that will help grow business. If you would like to join the team, reply to this email no later than Friday, Sept 18. All voices welcome!

Our goal is to provide all member stations access to a report with county-by-county data on Arizona radio and TV use (and digital habits). Given the audience pattern shifts during COVID-19, we have delayed this study until early 2021.

FCC RELEASES TV AND RADIO FEES FOR 2020
The FCC just released its order on 2020 Regulatory Fees for broadcasters.

The good news is that the FCC adopted several proposals made by the Arizona Broadcasters Association to assist in these tough times. They include:
  1.  Simplifying the filing requirements for stations seeking relief by allowing such requests to be filed by email, and waiving its rule to require waiver requests and deferral requests to be separately filed.

  2. Allowing requests for extended payment terms to be made by email.

  3. Reducing the interest rate charged for installment payment plans to a “nominal” rate, and eliminating the down payment requirement.

  4. Granting flexibility in how stations can demonstrate financial hardship.

  5. Waiving the FCC’s Red Light rule so that stations already owing money to the FCC aren’t blocked from seeking regulatory fee relief.
Here is the regulatory fees portal. All fees are due by September 25, 2020.

On the regulatory fees, you will NOT see the type of large-scale relief we were hoping for. The FCC says its hands are tied by statute.  As a result, there has been a small reduction, but no fundamental change. We'll keep fighting!

LAST CALL:
PERSONALIZED AE TRAINING IN SEPTEMBER

If you have a new seller on your team, make sure they get the proper training needed, especially as we work to come back from COVID-19 challenges.

Once each quarter, the ABA offers member stations access to a FREE 7-week onboarding program with virtual one-on-one feedback designed to build media sales confidence. The next training begins on Monday, September 14.

One of the most important parts of any sale is doing a great Customer Needs Analysis. Since COVID, we have developed a new list of CNA questions with our training partner P1 Learning, and it's already helping sellers close more deals.

To sign up your newest AE (or those who just want some mentoring), send an email ASAP to info@azbroadcasters.org. It's a FREE service!

ARIZONA BROADCASTERS AND THE ARIZONA CENSUS
Our state is in countdown mode to complete the 2020 Census and we've reached the point where broadcasters are really the last stand to help a sizable under performance. As of this week, Arizona is in the bottom five states for total completion with a 62% self-response rate.
  • A 1% under count could result in the loss of $60 million annually for AZ.
  • New estimates shed doubt on Arizona getting an extra U.S. Rep in DC.
  • For each person not counted, the state could lose $3,000 annually.
While I know some of you have benefited from Census campaign ad buys (and others have not), I'm putting out this request in the name of public service to ask for any additional over-the-air support or news coverage between now and September 30. Everyone who lives in the state can complete the census today at azcensus2020.gov or by calling 1-844-330-2020. Plus, everyone who has already completed the census is urgently needed to probe their friends and family to do the same before time runs out. For additional questions or media interview opportunities, contact Alec Thomson (athomson@az.gov, 602-717-7969).

FCC FINES IN AUGUST + INSPECTION REMINDER:
Each month, the ABA asks our Washington-based law firm partner to flag us on any FCC violations for broadcasters. In August, the FCC’s media bureau flagged the below violations around the country:
News like this is why the ABA offers what’s arguably our most beneficial member service. The Arizona Broadcasters Inspection Program (ABIP) protects member TV and radio stations from routine FCC inspection and fines. Once a station passes our inspection program, they receive an FCC-approved certificate which lasts for three years to prohibit routine FCC inspections.

As we all try to find normalcy again, our inspectors are back on the road as station rules allow. Here’s more information.
