I am writing this educational missive to lead a change in the way we handle prostate cancer in the United States. There is an urgent need to raise public awareness about the deplorable way men’s prostate situation and PSA blood tests are being managed.

You are part of the Prostate Vanguard, a small group of men in the United States whose prostate situation is being monitored with imaging (Color Doppler Ultrasound, MRI) rather than biopsies.  However, I am hoping that you will pass this message on to your friends and family and ask them to sign up to our mailing list.

You probably didn’t know that over ONE MILLION men had a prostate biopsy last year.  Out of these one million, 30,000 ended up in the hospital with an infection. One thousand ended up dying! An additional 100,000 men were diagnosed with low-risk prostate cancer. Low-risk is essentially harmless, but at the word “cancer” most men end up being frightened into unnecessary treatment.
These problems can be avoided!  New studies show that MRI or Color Doppler is just as accurate as a biopsy. And with imaging instead of biopsy the risk of infection is zero and the risk of an unnecessary diagnosis of low-risk prostate cancer is greatly reduced.

This is only my introduction to you on this important topic. The goal is to raise awareness about the dangers of prostate biopsy and the existence of safe alternatives. Please look out for future communications via email.  I am grateful for your attention on this important subject.
