November UVA Tableau User Group Meeting

The Virtual UVA Tableau User Group is coming up on Wednesday, November 17th at 2 pm. Join Tableau users from across UVA to enhance your Tableau skills and to see how Tableau is being leveraged by three of your colleagues at UVA. Register today!

Open Science Framework for Institutions

The Open Science Framework (OSF) is a tool that enables rigorous, reproducible science by providing collaboration, registration, and data management support across the entire research lifecycle. Using OSF enables researchers to organize files, collaborators, protocols, hypotheses, analysis plans, registrations, data, and preprints in one interface for discovery and reuse. OSF integrates with GitHub, Google Docs, and the Dataverse software.

UVA Library has been a supporting member of the Open Science Framework (OSF) since 2016. This year the UVA Library became a Partner member for OSF for Institutions (OSFI). UVA’s membership lets you affiliate your public research with the University of Virginia and also allows single-sign on through Netbadge.

Conducting your research through UVA's OSFI platform is a strategic way to enhance transparency, foster collaboration, and increase the visibility of your research. If you have any questions or want more information on the Open Science Framework, please contact UVA's OSF Ambassador Sherry Lake, shlake@virginia.edu

Data Strategies: Determine a File Naming Strategy

We're nudging you today to encourage you to determine a file naming strategy.  When we're getting work done, we don't always think about how we name our files. That's how we sometimes end up with directories that look like this:

Source: xkcd https://xkcd.com/1459/

Take some time now to think about a template for naming your files. Choose from the elements below (and think of others) that are meaningful to you and help you understand what's contained in your files:

  • Project lead's last name or initials
  • File creator's last name or initials
  • Project name/acronym
  • Date file created/generated (in YYYY-MM-DD format)
  • Version number (with leading zeroes)

Ready for the next level? Design an organized directory structure in 15 minutes

Use the File Structure and Naming Prompt Sheet from Research Data Services to design a directory structure that sorts and organizes your project files in a way that works for you.

Working with a team? Bring the File Structure and Naming Prompt Sheet to your next meeting and work collaboratively to come up with a structure everyone can use.

DATAPALOOZA 2021: Learning In Action

Join the University of Virginia's School of Data Science for Datapalooza 2021: Learning in Action, this year held virtually and in person. Next Friday, Nov. 19, starting at 11 AM, the SDS will feature guest speakers and researchers as they present a range of workshops on data science topics and more!
