Endangered Data Week

The UVA Library is supporting the 2nd annual Endangered Data Week (February 26 - March 2) through a number of events. A collaborative effort, coordinated across campuses, libraries, citizen science initiatives, and cultural heritage institutions, EDW aims to shed light on public datasets in danger of being mishandled or lost and to build a culture of data consciousness. This week, we're highlighting open datasets, tools, and processes that serve as examples of how to prevent data from becoming endangered.

No reservations are required, light refreshments will be provided, so please join us!

These events are being hosted by UVa Library's Research Data Services and Scholars’ Lab with support from the Data Science Institute at UVa.

For more information about other Endangered Data Week events around the country and around the world, visit the Endangered Data Week website.

Spring Data Purchase Program

UVA Library invites UVA-affiliated researchers to apply to the Spring round of this year's Data Purchase Program. Awards are directed at smaller research needs (around $1,000 to $5,000), though the total amount available will depend on the number of applications and the potential overall impact on UVA’s research mission. The deadline for submission for the Data Purchase Program is March 5, 2018.  Please visit the main Data Purchase Program page to learn more.

Meet Your Science and Engineering Librarian!

Erich Purpur is a Science & Engineering Librarian in Research Data Services. He joined UVA in September 2017, and serves as the liaison to Civil & Environmental Engineering, Electrical & Computer Engineering, Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering, and Systems & Information Engineering. His job at the highest level is to work with departments to support their teaching, learning, and research needs. Erich is also an experienced GIS user and can provide GIS software support to supplement and expand on the services available in the Scholar's Lab. You can find Erich in the Brown Science and Engineering Library, or email him at

In his free time you'll find Erich outside, usually rock climbing. He has climbed extensively across the US and many international destinations. He likes to learn foreign languages and has dabbled in many. He also tries to volunteer more. He is a Big Brother in the local Big Brothers/Big Sisters program and works off and on with Gam3, an NGO based in Denmark which provides recreation opportunities for under-privileged kids.
