November R Users Group

The UVa R Users group is meeting Tuesday, November 7 from 4:30 – 6:00 in Alderman Library, Room 421. Jon Meek, an R developer based in Williamsburg, VA, will demonstrate how to make performance improvements in R using C++, discuss performance differences between laptops and desktops, and how to read large data sets efficiently. There will also be a raffle for a $25 Amazon gift card. Simply RSVP and show up for a chance to win. As  always there will be plenty of coffee, tea and cookies on hand. Spring 2018 Data Science Short Courses

The Library’s Research Data Services is offering 1-credit data science courses in Spring 2018 through the Data Science Institute. Open to all students, these courses are designed to provide short, guided training and practice on relevant data science skills.

DS 6501 Data Wrangling in Python (meets T/R 2-3:15 from 1/18/2018-2/20/2018)
The goal of this class is to make the skills of data wrangling in Python familiar and easy to use, from reading and writing data to cleaning, transforming, merging, reshaping, aggregating and visualizing data.

DS 5559 Public Interest Data Lab (meets Friday 12-2 1/19/2018-3/30/2018)
The lab course will provide experience working collaboratively, openly, and reproducibly on a data science project organized by the lab director — working with a local agency to understand their data and improve processes.

Have you registered for DATAPALOOZA 2017? There's still time! Join the University of Virginia Data Science Institute, in coordination with UVA's Office of the Vice President for Research and Office of the Vice President for Information Technology, for a full day of data science on Friday, November 10. This year's event will feature panels in healthcare, business, social media, and data visualization, along with research highlight from across Grounds and presentations from leaders in the field. It kicks off with a talk by New York Times Chief Data Scientist Chris Wiggins on Thursday, Nov. 9. Visit DATAPALOOZA 2017 to register, view the agenda, learn about the key note speakers, and more.

Meet Your Senior Research Data Scientist

Do you have an idea for a data science project but need help with a design or programming? Maybe you know what you want to do, but don’t know the computation resource scene at UVA. Pete Alonzi, one of our Data Scientists at UVA Library,  can help. Drawing on his background in Particle Physics, Pete specializes in experimental design, computational data analysis, collection, and simulation. Questions?  Contact Pete at
