Noura Howell on Emotional Meaning-Making with Data

Date: Tuesday, 03/29/2022
Time: 10:30AM-12:00PM

Join us for a lecture by Noura Howell on Emotional Meaning-Making with Data.  Sensor technologies--from smart watches to sensors hidden in walls or furniture--increasingly produce biodata about human bodies and behaviors, and even claim to offer insights into human emotions. Trying to use data science approaches to understand the complexity of human emotional experiences can lead to challenges and ethical issues. In this talk we'll explore how design research methods can help address these challenges and ethical issues by enabling humans to take a more active role in emotional meaning-making with their own data.  Noura Howell is an assistant professor in Digital Media at Georgia Tech.  Her design research explores biodata--data about human bodies and behaviors--and in particular biodata pertaining to emotions.

This program is presented in co-sponsorship with UVA Library's Scholars' Lab.

LibraData Repository Updates

Did you know that UVA has a data repository? LibraData is a place for UVA researchers to share data and other products of research (code, images, protocols, etc.) publicly, and is part of the Libra Scholarly Repository suite.

LibraData is UVA's local instance of the Dataverse software, developed and used by Harvard University. If you have funder or journal requirements for sharing data, LibraData might be the repository for you.

We like these cool features of LibraData:

  • bulk upload of files,
  • previewing files before download,
  • embargoes,
  • connection with Binder to launch Jupyter Notebooks, and
  • automatic uploading from GitHub.
To find out more about using and depositing in LibraData, contact libra@virginia.edu or check out the FAQ.
