Newsflash: July 2014

Dear colleagues,

The Belize Shrimp Growers Association announced last month that they expect to enter eight farms, some 90 per cent of shrimp production in Belize, for assessment against the ASC standard. This is a fantastic commitment and, as they work together to demonstrate their responsible farming, it will serve as an example for Associations in many other countries. It embodies what our programme is about in driving improvements to transform aquaculture.

It was also exciting to see that in Malaysia, the ASC certified tilapia farm, Trapia Malaysia, was in the spotlight during the Asian Sustainable Seafood Festival as retailers, distributors, restaurant owners and others learnt about their responsible practices. Thanks to WWF Malaysia, a trip to the farm was arranged. The successful visit illustrates how to engage the market and demonstrate to the supply chain how collective commitments to responsible seafood sourcing and farming drive real environmental and social benefits.
