Newsflash: August 2016

Dear Colleagues,

The Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games are always must see television, and due to the fact the Rio 2016 is serving a record amount of certified seafood at the Games, we are watching with a new sense of excitement.
The Rio commitment is just one of the benefits of the strong growth of the ASC. Last month we surpassed 300 certified farms in the programme and now have more than 1 million tonnes of seafood certified. We have just launched the public review of the Core Standard, the result of the harmonisation project, which we believe will make the certification, accreditation and training processes more efficient.  We also received a great deal of positive feedback during the public consultation for Multi-site and Group Certification methodologies and the public consultation for the salmon, tilapia and pangasius operational reviews will be forthcoming shortly.
Our summer got off to a roaring start with the first ever ASC and MSC joint Seafood Futures Forum at the Seafood Expo Global in Brussels. Over the past months, we have continued to welcome new partners to the programme with Carrefour, HEMA, Hilton Worldwide and Park Hyatt Tokyo all now providing ASC certified seafood to their clientele. We are especially pleased with these developments as continued growth in retail and hospitality commitments allow us to reach an ever increasing number of consumers, thereby bolstering demand for certified fish from producers who take care to reduce negative environmental and social impacts.
