Newsflash: January 2016

Dear Colleagues,

A new year is a natural time for celebration and reflection, and at ASC we have reason for both in equal measure.

First, the celebration. The year began with our announcement that more than 200 farms have achieved ASC certification. With a further 100 farms currently in assessment and many exciting new developments in the works, including an expansion of our programme into the certification of seriola and cobia, we anticipate great things in 2016.

Milestones over the last period included welcoming the first Chinese farms to the programme and the introduction of ASC certified shrimp products at AEON, the largest retailer in Japan. The first abalone farm became ASC certified and the first tilapia farm in Belize earned certification.  And, Lidl Germany made an ambitious commitment to offer only responsibly sourced farmed seafood to their customers from 2018.

In order to be sure we remain at the vanguard of responsible aquaculture, ASC makes time for periodic review and reflection of our programme. The result of our recent review led to the release of an updated Certification and Accreditation Requirement in December.

I'd like to thank all of our partners, contributors and friends who have supported ASC's growth over the last year. We look forward to continuing our work with you, and I wish you every success in the year ahead.

Chris Ninnes, Chief Executive Officer ASC
