RAF Reserves remember Anzac Day

Personnel from 501 (County of Gloucestershire) Squadron (Sqn), representing RAF Brize Norton, paraded at Leighterton, Gloucestershire on 24 April 2016 to commemorate ANZAC Day, and to remember the 24 members of the Australian Flying Corps (AFC) who are buried in Leighterton cemetery. 
In WWI, Australia was the only British dominion to raise, equip and deploy in the field, its own flying corps.  Number 1 Squadron, Australian Flying Corps (AFC), served in Palestine and Numbers 2, 3 and 4 Squadrons AFC flew on the Western Front in France. Read more.

South West Reserves and Cadets attend Ten Tors en-masse

Reserves and Cadets from across the South West attended this year’s Ten Tors and Jubilee Challenge in usually high numbers.

In total 26 Cadet units from across the South West were represented at the event, across all three distances of 35, 45 and 55 miles. The Cadets were among 2,400 young people

between 14 and 19 who took part in the 56thevent.  The event, which is the largest youth challenge in the UK, is organised by the Army’s Regional Command, Headquarters South West, and supported by the Royal Air Force and the Royal Navy.  Read more.

Army cadets tackle lung-busting log-carrying challenge

Extraordinary determination and months of training carried four Tiverton Army Cadets to success in a sponsored log run last week.

The cadets lifted the pole weighing 50kg plus over a 7km distance in just under an hour.  Read more.

Gloucestershire schools recognised for support to the Armed Forces community


Seven Gloucestershire schools have been presented with a Bronze Defence Employer Recognition Scheme Award by the Lord Lieutenant of Gloucestershire, in recognition of the support they offer the Armed Forces Community.

Each of the seven schools, which include; All Saints’ Academy, Cheltenham College, The Dean Academy, Dean Close School, Gloucester Academy, Lakers School and Pate’s Grammar School, has signed the Armed Forces Covenant.

All of the schools who have pledged their support to the Armed Forces community have Combined Cadet Force units, which form part of the extra-curricular activities offered to students.  Read more.

Army Cadets' Silver Bugles band to join Sounding Retreat at Horse Guards Parade

The Silver Bugles Band of Somerset Army Cadet Force is taking part in Sounding Retreat with the Massed Bands & Bugle of The Rifles at Horse Guards Parade in London on 1-2 June.

The Silver Bugles are used to being in the limelight, having played for Her Majesty The Queen and other royal

visitors, performed at the Swift & Bold Concert at the Royal Albert Hall, at the Royal Bath and West show and other events, big and small, throughout the county and further afield.

The Band, drawn from detachments at Weston-super-Mare and Frome, currently has 45 cadets aged between 12 and 18, and seven adult instructors.

The majority of band members arrive with little or no musical background or knowledge but, showing self-discipline and tenacity, they learn very quickly to produce high quality music.  Read more.

Yeovil Army Reserve Centre undergoes major renovation


Yeovil’s 103-year-old Territorial Army drill hall is being transformed into a modern Army Reserve Centre with an investment of well in excess of half a million pounds.

It will bring it up to the standard of other military training facilities in the region.

Once reconfigured and refurbished, the building at Southville will be home to a Flight (detachment) of 675 (RIFLES) Squadron, 6th Regiment, Army Air Corps. They are likely to move in later this year, having been training temporarily at Royal Naval Air Station Yeovilton since being established in 2014.  Read more.
