New Chief Executive for Wessex Reserve Forces' and Cadets' Association

Brigadier Steve Hodder has taken over as Chief Executive of Wessex Reserve Forces’ & Cadets’ Association, succeeding Tony Dalby-Welsh who led the organisation for 12 years.

One of Steve’s main aims is to empower the organisation’s volunteer membership so that the RFCA can provide an even more effective link between the military and civilian communities.

He also sees the RFCA needing to be ‘flexible and agile’ in responding to any new tasks or expanding the support given to Reserve Forces and Cadet organisations.  Read more.

Rugby World Cup escorted into Exeter by Devon and Somerset Air Cadets - August

Air Cadets from Devon and Somerset Wing ATC had the honor of escorting the Webb Ellis trophy into Exeter on the fifth day of the Cup’s tour around the United Kingdom. 

The Cup was escorted into Exeter City Centre by Cadets from the Devon and
Somerset Wing Music Flight. The Cadets preceded the Cup on the march from Exeter Civic Centre to the Guildhall.  Read more.

Former Army Cadet Laura Stearn recognised after saving man's life on bus

A NORTH Cornwall student has spoken of the "overwhelming" moment she saved a man's life after he collapsed on a bus.

Laura Stearn said talking about the incident, which happened as she travelled home from Plymouth University, still gives her goose-bumps.

The 21-year-old was on a near-empty bus back to her Altarnun home when, as it went through the village of

Stoke Climsland, a passenger on the bus keeled over."All of a sudden I heard this massive thump," she said.

"I looked round and a man had collapsed. The only other people on the bus was a mum and her child; the kid started screaming so I had to calm them down too," she explained. Read more.

Gurkha band to perform at Bristol Cathedral in fund-raising concert- August

The celebrated Band of the Brigade of Gurkhas is coming to Bristol on 25 July for a special concert – to mark 200 years’ unbroken service to the British Crown and to raise money for the Gurkha Welfare Trust’s Nepal Earthquake Disaster Appeal.

100 Plymouth employers attend Reserves engagement event- August

Over 100 local employers from Devon and Cornwall gathered at the spectacular Royal Citadel, Plymouth on Tuesday evening (7th July) to hear about the benefits of employing Reservists.
Representatives from Plymouth Citybus Princess Yachts, The Cornwall College Group and Plymouth High School for Girls were among the 100 employers who attended the event, which was hosted by the Army Engagement team and 1 Artillery Brigade.

Exeter accountants Simpkins Edwards recognised for supporting Armed Forces- August

Exeter-based accountancy firm Simpkins Edwards has received the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme Bronze Award for its support of the defence community.

The firm’s partner Jean-Paul Quertier is currently second in command with 6th Battalion the Rifles.  Read more.

The Wessex Reserve Forces' & Cadets' Association is an independent, non-for-profit organisation dedicated to supporting and promoting the 3000 tri-service Reservists and 14,000 Cadets across the South West of England.
