October 31 ALLLM Reception

Responding to the Opiate Crisis in Toronto

“People will die if Doug Ford's government doesn't reverse its decision to stop funding some safe injection sites,” said Toronto's Medical Officer of Health on Monday, but [Ontario Premier Doug Ford] said he also has to listen to residents who don't want the sites in their "backyard."

Canadian Broadcasting Corporation,  April 1, 2019

Join us to hear Paulos Gebreyesus, Executive Director of the Regent Park Community Health Centre, and the Rev. Dr. Alison Falby of the All Saints Church and Community Health Centre, who are responding in practical and pragmatic ways to a crisis which is exploding so quickly that it’s diverting resources and energy away from other longer term programming in their agencies.

We’ll invite them to engage us in a discussion about:
  • The extent and impact of the opiate crisis on Toronto’s population.
  • The social and political debate in Ontario over whether supervised injection sites are an appropriate and necessary way to save lives, or an abdication of social responsibility.
  • The ethics of harm reduction, and its connection to principles of social justice that are rooted in our religious traditions.
  • The practical and ethical concerns that need to be addressed even by those who are convinced that strategies such as supervised injection sites are morally justifiable and an appropriate use of public dollars.

On Friday morning, come to a follow-up workshop to discuss how post-degree professional development and learning can support and encourage ministry leaders of faith communities to lead theologically and practically within their shifting contexts, using the Toronto Opiate Crisis as a case study for education into faith and the common good.

Saturday November 2 12:30 pm ET

Join us for our Annual General Meeting

This is our annual opportunity to network with other folks who create continuing education programming, learn from the best, and compare notes on what's working and what's not. Join us to meet your colleagues, and continue the conversation on how ALLLM can best support our important work.

If you're joining us in Toronto, we've set up a working lunch, so we can spend a bit more informal time together before getting down to business. When you register, please be sure to check the option for food.

If you can't come to Toronto, we still need to hear your voice! We're setting up a Zoom meeting to include any who want to join us from afar. Stay tuned for details on how to connect.

Program Updates

REA provides a wide variety of breakout sessions that you're welcome to choose from during the Conference. Three have been specifically programmed by ALLLM, and we hope these will spark your imagination as a continuing educator, and give you a chance to rub shoulders with colleagues who also create lifelong learning opportunities.

Here's a list of the breakout sessions we've created for you:
  • Faith in Action: For the Common Good
Using the opening session, “Where Help and Harm Collide: Responding to the Opiate Crisis in Toronto” as a case study, this workshop invites participants to explore how post-degree professional development and learning can support and encourage ministry leaders of faith communities to lead theologically and practically within their contexts. Attendance at the opening session not required.
  • Educating Congregations, Twenty-five Years Later
Dr. Helen Blier, Director of Continuing Education, Pittsburgh Theological Seminary, Pittsburgh, PA
How do we, as faith communities, confront the realities of suffering, social transition, and ideologies and structures that do not promote the flourishing of all?
  • The Promises and Challenges of Independent Centers for Lifelong Learning for Ministry
Dr. Joshua H. Lunde-Whitler, Executive Director, Walker Center for Ecumenical Exchange, Newton MA
Consider ways that independent centers and institutions can serve as incubatory spaces which promote lifelong praxis for the common good
