Celebrate National Poetry Month

To celebrate National Poetry Month in April, Writers in the Schools (WITS) is partnering with local artists to transform trees to “Poet Trees” in Buffalo Bayou Park (east of Lost Lake), Discovery Green, East End Esplanade on Navigation, and the Houston Public Library in The Heights. Members of the community are encouraged to interact with the Poet Trees by writing lines to poems on tags and hanging them on branches and wires surrounding the trees. For more information about the Poet Tree locations and details, visit

H-E-B Coupon benefiting EarthShare of Texas and BBP!

BBP is pleased to announce that H-E-B, in recognition of Earth Day, has selected EarthShare of Texas to be the April beneficiary for its in-store coupon promotion. This means that customers can tear off and add check-out coupons worth $1, $3, or $5 to their total bill to support environmental work throughout the State of Texas for the entire month of April.

H-E-B supports many EarthShare of Texas organizations with corporate grants or in-kind contributions. The April tear-pad promotion is different as it enables H-E-B customers to bolster the diverse environmental program work of more than three dozen EarthShare of Texas’ organizations, including Buffalo Bayou Partnership. The customers’ dollars will go directly to these organizations.

Thanks for visiting Buffalo Bayou Park!

We continue to be pleased by the sheer number and diversity of visitors to Buffalo Bayou Park. In February, Houston-Galveston Area Council (H-GAC) installed temporary pedestrian/bicycle counters in 12 locations throughout the 160-acre park. The counters were in place for a two-week period, and three counters stopped collecting data a few days before they were retrieved as they reached maximum storage capacity (approximately 14,000 users) – this has only happened once before, according to H-GAC! You can read the full report here. Thank you so much for making Buffalo Bayou Park a vibrant and popular greenspace in this city!

TIGER Trail in Downtown Now Open

A little rain did not stop us from officially opening the Buffalo Bayou Path: Smith Street to Travis Street TIGER Trail yesterday morning. Thanks to a generous $1 million donation from BBP board member, Mike Garver, BBP was the project sponsor of the $4.6 million TIGER trail that now connects Sesquicentennial Park to Allen’s Landing in downtown.

BBP partnered with the Houston Parks & Recreation Department, Houston Parks Board and Greater East End Management District to provide matching dollars for trails along Buffalo and White Oak Bayous, and on-street connections in the East End.
Buffalo Bayou Currents is a monthly e-newsletter produced by Buffalo Bayou Partnership.

Thanks for Voting!

Thanks to all the individuals who voted for Buffalo Bayou Park in the USA Today / 10Best Readers' Choice Travel Awards for "Best City Park!" Voting has closed, but you can now see where we finished!
