The SPCA/Humane Society of Prince George’s County, Inc. is a non-profit organization of volunteers dedicated to animal welfare. We do not operate the county shelter. We are chartered by the State of Maryland, but we receive no state or county funds. Our activities are supported solely by contributions, dues, and fundraising events.

Slow Summer for Adoptions

Whether it's the slow economy or just the "dog days of summer", our foster adoptions have slowed to a crawl over the last few months. We don't have many foster homes as it is, and when we're not placing many for adoption, we can't save any new animals from the shelter, where they are at serious risk of being euthanized.

"The shelter has so many animals with sad histories. Because we have so few foster homes right now, their futures are not bright. It's very difficult to go to the shelter and see so many dogs and cats that we can't take into our program," says Margie Dowsett, SPCA/HS Foster Coordinator.

Our volunteers have been hard at work marketing our animals and meeting potential adopters at the weekly adoption events, but our 2013 adoptions are down by 40% from the same period in 2012. While we are still helping the animals of Prince George's County in other ways, this is one area in which we're feeling pinched.

In addition to adoption events, SPCA/HS foster animals are featured on our website, on Petfinder.com, and through various TV appearances. But with your help, we can do even more. Please consider checking these listings a few times a week to see if we have the perfect pet for your family. Then, share our pet photos and bios on your Facebook page and Twitter feed. You never know who might be looking for a new best friend, and you could help make the perfect match!

BY THE NUMBERS
July 2013

We administered 208 low-cost vaccinations at the July clinic event.

We responded to 182 cruelty and abuse calls received on our 24-hour hotline.
The PG County shelter now has an outdoor dog run! That means the shelter dogs have somewhere to play and stretch their legs, and it's all thanks to our volunteers and donors! In a continuing effort to improve the lives of all animals in the county, our organization paid for the materials and installation.

There are so many animals that we cannot take from the shelter. This is one way that we can help them while they are in there. Take a look next time you're there.

Adoptable of the Month

Meet Belle. At about 16 months now, Belle is near the end of "doggie adolescence"---and she's growing up to be a sweet, athletic girl.  She'd be a wonderful companion for a fitness walker or jogger. With the basic dog agility work and retrieve games that she has learned, she's also easy to exercise in a fenced yard area. You can meet Belle at one of our adoption shows, or a private meeting can be arranged at a time convenient for you.

FACT: Since our inception, the SPCA/HS has spayed or neutered more than 20,780 animals at our clinic. We may be small, but we are mighty!

Success Story

"Our loving journey with Diesel began when our family suffered the unexpected and devastating loss of our rottweiler Lily. Her absence hung high in the air, especially for our 13 year old Australian Shepherd, Ozzy, who was missing his sidekick. To find even an ounce of emotional relief we began to search the internet for different dog adoption agencies. It didn't take any time at all until we were fortunate enough to stumble across Diesel. Our hearts were instantly stolen by this adorable rottweiler-German Shepherd-mix heart throb.

In the one year that we have made Diesel our own, he has been on more trips than probably the average person. He loves car rides, going to the beach and especially camping where he loves to jump into the water and obediently return every stick that David throws to him. It would take a stranger one glance to realize the hold that Diesel has on our hearts and anyone who is lucky enough to cross paths with him.

He has brought our family so much joy, given Ozzy a sidekick, and brought tears to our eyes from laughing so much. We wouldn't trade him from the world and are blessed to call him our own. Not only did Diesel allow our family into his own heart, but he patched up ours and made them beat with love as they once did before with Lily."
