The SPCA/Humane Society of Prince George’s County, Inc. is a non-profit organization of volunteers dedicated to animal welfare. We do not operate the county shelter. We are chartered by the State of Maryland, but we receive no state or county funds. Our activities are supported solely by contributions, dues, and fundraising events.

We Need Fosters!

We are desperately short on foster homes. Our current fostering volunteers are doing an awesome job, but they can't do it alone.

Fostering for the SPCA/HS is a little like bringing home a new pet. There are certainly challenges, but rewards come as kisses and wiggles. SPCA/HS Adoption Coordinator, Sandy Twigg, explains, "The Prince George's County shelter, where most of our animals come from, is a public shelter and is frequently filled to capacity.  The shelter is often forced to euthanize perfectly adoptable dogs and cats for space. All these animals need is a little time and some TLC in foster care to find the forever home they deserve."

Research has shown that most foster volunteers are recruited through friends and family. So make this your mission for August. Ask your sister! Ask your neighbor! Ask the guy in the cubicle next to yours! Point them to our website, forward them this e-newsletter, or share our Facebook link with them.

If you are interested in fostering, send us an email. One of our volunteers will contact you to go over program details, answer any questions, and help you get started in rescue!

Chilling Out

Community Forklift donated a full-size refrigerator to us for use at the clinic. We needed to replace our old one, which is used to store vaccines and other medications for patients at our monthly low-cost vaccination and quarterly spay/neuter clinics. Thank you, Community Forklift, and thank you to volunteers Alyson, Chris, and Faith who handled the delivery and set up!

Technical Difficulties

Our website has undergone some emergency repairs and will be rebuilt over the next few months. Please bear with us and alert us to any malfunctioning elements. We will do our best to keep things going until the pros get our new website up and running.

By the Numbers – June 2013

We administered 208 low-cost vaccinations at the June 2nd clinic event.

We responded to 174 cruelty and abuse calls received on our 24-hour hotline.

We altered 60 animals at the June 22nd/23rd Spay Neuter clinic, most of which were done at no cost for qualifying low-income families.

Adoptable of the Month

Shadow is a very loving and sociable cat who enjoys getting lots of attention and playing with toys. Among her many quirks are a preference for being groomed with a lint roller and sleeping on her back with all four paws in the air. She was previously in a home with no other pets, but she has not shown aggression towards other cats and dogs in her foster home.

Success Story

"I first met Angus at the Bowie adoption show in February. I was very drawn to him because he was so calm— oblivious to all the chaos around him. When his foster brought him to the house to see how he responded to our cats, he was curious. He went upstairs to the master bedroom and walked past my oldest cat. Then he saw Davey, our second cat, under the bed. Angus sniffed him. But Davey hissed at him. Angus simply cried and ran to his foster. I knew at that moment he was the dog for my family.

My wife, who has allergies and isn’t an animal person, couldn’t help but fall in love with Angus too. Angus sheds minimally, but he fits right into our family because he is sensitive, affectionate, chill, and a little needy. We are all a little needy in our house. We go for family walks and enjoy seeing Angus happy. His personality was perfect for our household. In the end, that was what mattered most."

Under the Weather

SPCA/HS foster dog Griffin successfully came through his surgery for bladder stones and a testicular tumor. While he waits for his forever home, this sweet little Cairn Terrior is recuperating in a foster home. Some might think an older shelter dog isn't worth all this effort, but we think Griffin's got a lot more mileage in him!
