Year End 2019

Tales from the Bark Side

Year in Review

Thanks to our wonderful PGSPCA volunteers, staff, and donors—2019 was a great year for launching new programs and supporting existing initiatives!

FeralFix Clinics
We launched FeralFix this year, providing $25 spay/neuter (including rabies shots and eartips) for free-roaming cats. We had amazing success with this program, sterilizing over 121 cats in 2019, and we plan to hold monthly FeralFix clinics in 2020. We can lend traps to PG residents whose neighborhoods are overrun with free-roaming cats, and we’ll coordinate with local feral groups to target specific areas that need help. Most importantly, we are ready to train more volunteers in cat trapping. If you’re interested, please message us at
pgspcavol@gmail.com.

Cat Adoptions
With the additional focus on free-roaming cats, we’ve also beefed up our cat adoption program. With more cat fosters, we can save more cats from the county shelter and take in free-roaming kittens for socialization and adoption. We can always use more foster volunteers, so consider opening your home to a needy soul. Message us at pgspcavol@gmail.com if you’re interested.

Wellness Palooza
We held our first wellness clinic this year, in partnership with the Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Foundation (VECCF). The Wellness Palooza in September provided free services to hundreds of qualifying PG county pet owners. We administered vaccinations, microchips, nail trims, deworming, preventative flea and tick medicine, and tests for heartworms and FeLV/FIV. The event was overwhelmingly popular and we hope to host another Palooza in 2020!

Fighting Breed Restrictions
We’ve worked for a long time to overturn PG County's decades-old ban on “pit bull” type dogs, and we came closer than ever this year. Unfortunately, the County Council voted in November to keep the ban in place, but they acknowledged the need to further study the issue in 2020. With the help of many volunteers and our partners at Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), Best Friends Animal Society, and Humane Rescue Alliance (HRA), we educated the public about common breed misconceptions and the need for behavioral-based laws. We are especially grateful to board member Anita Summers, who has worked tirelessly with the County Council on this issue and whose letter to the editor was featured in the Washington Post

Calling All Volunteers!

The PGSPCA provides a variety of services to the people and pets of Prince George’s County—especially through our low-cost Forestville clinic. We believe that high prices shouldn’t prevent any animal from getting the care they need. We offer free and low-cost spay/neuter procedures, low-cost rabies and distemper shots, and low-cost microchipping, providing important preventative care to beloved pets who might not otherwise have access to these services.

There is one key part to successfully operating the clinic—you! While we welcome monetary donations and supplies such as towels and crates, volunteers are our most important resource. Our clinic events cannot operate smoothly without your help!

For spay/neuter events, we need volunteers to help check in pets, register owners, call owners with updates on procedure status, and comfort pets coming out of anesthesia. For vaccination events, we need both intakers and runners. Intakers fill out paperwork for pet owners and answer any questions they might have. Runners take pets from their owners, bring them into our facility, and return them after they get their shots.

Our current volunteers can’t say enough about how much they value the experience:

“I enjoyed working with the animals sooo much! It was a wonderful feeling to give back.”
     – Khay Henry

“I enjoy the rewards of giving back to the local community plus the satisfaction of getting the job done under sometimes challenging conditions.”
    – Nikki Prive

“I love volunteering at the low-cost shot clinic, helping folks keep their pets safe in an affordable manner! Also, I get to pet all the animals that come to the table, that's pretty great.”
     – Scarlet Jimenez

If you love animals and want to contribute, here’s your chance! Whether you’re looking to add an enriching activity to your monthly calendar or need to get a dog or cat "fix", come join our volunteer team to help improve the lives of Prince George’s County pets and the people who care about them.

Make a Difference with Holiday Giving!

Donations received during the holidays make up a significant portion of the PGSPCA operating budget. Without the generosity of our donors and volunteers, our community programs would not be possible. We are an all-volunteer organization, so your entire donation will be used to help the animals!

Please use any of the giving options below; it’s easy to support our crucial animal welfare programs all year long!

AmazonSmile
Your Amazon shopping can help the PGSPCA! Select our charity and 0.5% of your purchases will go to the PGSPCA! But remember, we only receive the donation if you start your shopping from AmazonSmile. To date, AmazonSmile has donated a total of $987.51.

Workplace Giving
Donations from the United Way and Combined Federal Campaign of the National Capital Area payroll deduction program make an enormous difference in our ability to help the county’s homeless animals!  Our United Way number is 8977 and the CFC designator is 73688. Maryland state employees can donate through the Maryland Charity Campaign using number 52-1047460.

Wish List (for the adoption and clinic programs)
We use a continuous stream of supplies to operate our shot clinics, spay/neuter clinics, and foster program. This is a great opportunity for groups looking to collect basic household goods that the PGSPCA team relies on!

Direct Monetary Donations
Your direct contributions to the SPCA/Humane Society of Prince George’s County are fully deductible to the extent allowable by law. We gladly accept donations in honor of or in memory of a loved one (human or pet). You can donate online via PayPal or credit card or by sending a check or money order to us at:
