The latest news from Northern Territory Airports
December 2014

From the CEO

The end of the year may be here but things are far from slowing down at our airports. We were thrilled last month to have our teams in Alice Springs and Tennant Creek recognised at the Australian Airports Association awards night, amongst an Australian-wide field of nominees. In Darwin, changes to our departures lounge continue with the opening of the redesigned News Travels and Australian Way store, the latest outlet to be refurbished as part of the Terminal Expansion Project.
We’re also looking ahead to 2015, when Virgin Australia will begin flights between our airports in Darwin and Alice Springs, as well as starting services on the Alice Springs – Adelaide sector. The planned Virgin lounges in Darwin and Alice Springs will open up to service the flights, which is great news for Territory travellers.
Thank you to our partners, stakeholders, passengers and visitors for a rewarding 2014. We wish you all the best for a wonderful Christmas and a safe and happy New Year.

Ian Kew, CEO Northern Territory Airports

Airports of the year

There were lots of proud moments for NT Airports at last month’s National Airport Industry Awards when Alice Springs Airport (ASA) was named Major Airport of the Year, and Tennant Creek Airport (TCA) took home the award for Regional Airport of the Year (less than 50,000 passengers). NT Airports CEO Ian Kew was the recipient of a Chairman’s Award, which celebrates individuals who have significantly contributed to the industry.

ASA won for its innovative solar energy project, which doubled the airport’s capacity to generate its own power. TCA was awarded for the resurfacing of its runway, taxiways and apron; a major project that has assured the community’s air access for the next 20 years.

Green thumbs at DIA

DIA staff recently got together with volunteers from Rapid Creek Landcare Group  (RCLG) and the local area for a sweaty tree planting session. Over the course of a humid build-up morning, 260 trees and shrubs were planted near the Woodland Loop of the Gurambai walking trail, taking the vegetation closer to the boundary of the conservation area.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for your huge efforts. To learn about the Rapid Creek walks on airport and find links to RCLG, visit our website.

Virgin to fly to Alice

In great news for Territory travellers, Virgin Australia announced recently that it will begin flying between Alice Springs and Darwin and Adelaide. From March 2015, Virgin Australia will operate three flights per week on a Darwin-Alice Springs-Adelaide routing. Passengers will also be able to enjoy a new regional lounge at Alice Springs Airport.
For the first time, Virgin Australia will offer two destinations from Alice Springs and will also open up travel opportunities between Adelaide and Darwin with a short stop in the Red Centre. The flights will be conveniently timed to offer a morning departure from Darwin and Alice Springs to Adelaide, with early afternoon return services from Adelaide back to the NT. Read more...

The stores are the latest to open as part of DIA's Terminal Expansion Project, which has transformed the building during 2014. Read on for the latest update
