If you’re curious about the bees in your yard or wish you saw more of them, don’t miss this Sunday’s program. He holds a PhD from University of Chicago and researches urban bee guilds. Learn more.

Fall Colors, Wild Ones Style

Borrow from Rembrandt, and put a little sprezzatura into your fall gardening. In a new post, Stephanie Walquist writes an appreciation for the subtle colors of a native plant garden as the days grow shorter.

When you dispense with the convention of cutting back your garden, your “apparent carelessness” is in fact intentional. It nurtures biodiversity. Your leaf pile is part of a rich ecosystem, supporting beneficial insects and migrating birds.

Care of Your New Trees and Shrubs

Thanks to everyone who bought trees and shrubs at our recent sale. You probably transplanted into fairly dry soil, given the weather of the past couple of months. While this week’s rain has brought relief, continue to water. The goal, as Morton Arboretum advises, is to keep roots moist, but not saturated. See the Arboretum’s articles on Drought Care and, for general advice, Caring for New Transplants.
