AUTISM GUERNSEY'S
SUMMER NEWSLETTER 2021
It's been a difficult 6 months and extremely busy with more and more referrals for support coming in, Covid restrictions and an office move (same building, opposite side), however our staff are always happy to provide support whenever possible.

Unfortunately I didn't have time to send out a Spring Newsletter, but I hope you enjoy our Summer update!
UPCOMING EVENTS!
GOLDEN GUERNSEY GOAT TRAIL
May - August

We are delighted with the response from the public regarding our Golden Guernsey Goat Trail around the island.  The goats will be displayed until mid August when they will be taken back to the store to have their paint touched up before going to auction on 16th September (further details to follow).  We are still looking for a sponsor if anybody would like to help us raise more money.

The Turfhunt App is available from the App Store to take part in the trail.  Although the App is free, a donation of £2 to https://giving.gg/donate/event/7012/Golden-Guernsey-Goat-Trail would be appreciated to cover costs.  The idea is to find the goats and complete each challenge by taking a photo on the App.  Once all the challenges are complete you will be entered into a draw to win an iPad kindly donated by JT.

A separate written quiz is also available for £2 from Cobo Bay Hotel, Imperial, The Farmhouse and Upclimbing.  All completed entries will be in with a chance of winning a Galaxy A40 phone donated by Sure Community Foundation.

Raffle tickets to win the Autism Guernsey goat, together with many runner-up prizes, are available to purchase for £5 from Savills, La Barbarie, Bella Luce, Guernsey Pearl, Isabelle Vets L'Islet, Mawson Collins and many more.
FLAG DAY
10th July

We will be holding our Flag Day at 8 different venues around the Island and are looking for volunteers to 'shake' a bucket for 1.5 hours.  If you are able to spare some time to raise money for a worthwhile local cause, please contact Mandy on 232879 or office@autismguernsey.org.gg.

We are also looking for fundraising volunteers to help out at events, which includes loading/unloading cars, manning stalls, selling raffle tickets etc.
NEWS!
OFFICE MOVE

We have recently moved offices, however we are still in the same building but on the opposite side.  Our front door is now near the petrol pumps.  We are sharing offices with Lovell Ozanne temporarily until they move into their new offices in September.
FASHION SHOW

Autism Guernsey held its 5th Annual Fashion Show & Auction at St. Pierre Park in June and raised an incredible £4,770, which was the best one yet!  Next year our aim is to reach £5,000.
GOVERNMENT HOUSE CHARITY FETE

Our Services Manager and Volunteers braved the temperamental weather on 26th June and raised £263 from selling clothes, shoes and handbags.  Well done ladies.
THANK YOU!
CHRISTIES GROUP INITIATIVE

We are extremely thankful to the Christies Group, including Christies, The Boathouse, Crabby Jacks & Chop, for continuing their initiative to raise money for Autism Guernsey.  They have kindly raised an incredible £4,399.07 during the first six months of 2021 which we couldn't be more thankful for.

20p is added to each food bill at any of the Christies Group restaurants after midday, however this is totally discretionary and customers have the option to opt out.

This initiative is kindly sponsored by Enjoy Guernsey, a free app for locals. https://www.enjoy.gg
ROCKMOUNT INITIATIVE

We are also extremely grateful to https://www.therocky.gg/ for also adding 10p to each food bill to raise money for Autism Guernsey.  This is totally discretionary and customers have the option to opt out if they prefer.

The Rockmount have kindly raised an amazing £2,243.83 during the first half of 2021 for Autism Guernsey, which we are extremely thankful for.
'CHOG'

During Lockdown Zoe Andrews came up with an initiative to raise money for Autism Guernsey.  She requested the 'Common Housepeople of Guernsey (CHOG)' to donate the cost of going out for a coffee.  She raised a massive £621.45.  Well done Zoe and everybody who donated.
STATIC ROWING COMPETITION

Two of IQ-EQ's Guernsey offices held a static rowing competition to see who could reach St Malo (100km away from Guernsey) first in order to raise money for Autism Guernsey.  The St. Martin's office won.  They have currently raised in excess of £1,200 but are still counting! Fantastic effort guys.  We are thrilled you raised so much money for our charity, especially when it was raining!
ROUGH GOLF DONATION

A massive thank you to Derek Crittel and St. Jacques Tavern for raising £1,689 in lieu of playing Rough Golf in Herm.  Well done everybody!
TOVERTAFEL

Rotary Guernesiais have given us an extremely generous donation to purchase a Tovertafel. The Tovertafel games conquer apathy by stimulating physical activity and social interaction and can improve the quality of life for people with a cognitive challenge.
RAFFLE

Kellie Vaudin kindly held a raffle in aid of Autism Guernsey and raised £356 which was incredible bearing in mind that she had to cancel selling the raffle tickets in town due to Covid lockdown.  Well done Kellie with perservering with it online.
FACE MASKS

Anna Taylor made some lovely, good quality facemasks during lockdown and sold them to raise money for Autism Guernsey.  She raised an amazing £550.  Well done Anna.
BAKE SALE

Bethany Ozanne, Cirana McArthur & Luke Fitzgerald kindly held a Bake Sale at St. Sampson's High School as part of their A.S.D.A.N. course in their final GCSE year and raised £40 for Autism Guernsey which was wonderful. Well done to you all!

TRAINING & COURSES
EARLYBIRD PLUS TRAINING

Following a generous donation from Hope for a Child, three of our staff have now become licensed facilitators to deliver the Earlybird Plus programme following intensive training.  This allows them to deliver the programme to parents of children aged between 4-10.  The first programme is now coming to an end having delivered it over the past few months to some of our parents.  The course provides parents with a better understanding of their child's needs, both at home and in school.
ANXIETY GREMLIN PROGRAMME

Autism Guernsey has been supporting three groups of children aged between 7 & 12,  to work on ‘Starving the Anxiety Gremlin’ which is a child friendly book that uses Cognitive Behavioural Therapy.  During this process, children are supported to recognise what is anxiety, what are the effects of anxiety, what causes their anxiety, how anxiety effects them, before exploring their own mechanisms to reduce the impact of anything that makes them feel anxious.
CORPORATE TRAINING

Our Services Manager, together with a few volunteers on the autism spectrum, have been delivering training to other third sectors, corporates and States' departments.  This is extremely beneficial as it helps employers/employees understand a bit more about autism and allow the businesses/departments to change the way they work to help work colleagues and customers/clients with autism to enjoy a better experience within their environment.  Training for third sectors is free, however we do charge £80 per hour for all other businesses.
HOW CAN YOU HELP SUPPORT AUTISM GUERNSEY

Lottery

The primary aim of the Autism Guernsey Lottery  is to ensure the sustainability of the Charity. Autism Guernsey offers a range of support in the local community including an Outreach Service where staff give one-to-one help to individuals and families. Demand outstrips our capacity and therefore we have a significant waiting list with referrals for support being received on a daily basis.

The charity receives no financial support from the States and has to rely on fundraising and charitable donations to continue the valuable work within the community.

Donation

If you would like to make a donation, please either send us a cheque made payable to Autism Guernsey or you can request bank details for a bank transfer from Autism Guernsey at T: 232879 or office@autismguernsey.org.gg.  We are also happy to accept cash donations.

Raffle Prizes

A significant part of our fundraising events is raffles and we are always looking for raffle prizes, however big or small.  If you have anything you would like to donate, please contact Autism Guernsey on
T: 232879 or office@autismguernsey.org.gg

KIND WORDS!

"Thank you so much for coming in to deliver the training this morning. I’m really glad the other office members came too, so that they heard how sensory overloaded this working environment is for the neuro-diverse. The course was really beneficial and I’m going to go away and read more."

"I wanted to write to say a huge thank you to you, especially to Sandra, for coming to the Health Improvement Commission and educating us so well about autism.  It was absolutely fascinating and eye opening, I learned so much and I know my colleagues did too.  The way you run the session is a perfect example of how to make this kind of education and awareness a genuine ‘human’ experience, thank you for that.  Powerful stuff."

"I just wanted to say thank you so much the workshop you provided. It sparked plenty of conversation and the feedback from the team was that it was excellent - they found it very interesting and had all learnt something from it."

"I’ve never witnessed XXX actually positively accepting joining in, anything, ever. But he didn’t bat an eye lid when I told him about joining your online chat.  I approached gently expecting a torrent of no. But he just said ‘yeah’. I replied did you hear what I said, you understand? ‘Yes, I want to do that’.  I am utterly astonished.  So I don’t know what you do differently but it clicks."

"The support we had from you last lockdown has really helped us this time. I've worried far less about school, and accepted that things will be all over the place.... I've also given myself more self care."

"The Accidental Zoo was great, XXX loved it. Thanks to all for organising."
