MESECVI Launches First Digital Platform of the Inter-American Regional Information System on Violence against Women

Washington, DC, May 24, 2022. As part of the ongoing efforts to measure, evaluate and assess progress in the implementation of the Inter-American Convention on the Prevention, Punishment, and Eradication of Violence against Women, “Belém do Pará Convention,” the MESECVI launches the Regional Information System on Violence against Women first digital platform.

The new platform, accessible from May 20, will optimize the collection of information provided by the States Parties in response to the indicators prepared by the Committee of Experts (CEVI). Likewise, the new digitized system will facilitate public access to this information at a later stage.

The monitoring and evaluation process is vital to implementing the Belém do Pará Convention. Therefore, the Follow-up Mechanism to the Belém do Pará Convention (MESECVI) of the OAS Inter-American Commission of Women was created to carry out this task, following the indicators prepared by the Committee of Experts. The system of indicators is designed to evaluate but also support and make visible the States Parties' efforts in terms of prevention, punishment, and eradication of violence against women in their path towards the implementation of the Belém do Pará Convention.

The launch of the new digital platform takes place within the framework of the "IV Multilateral Evaluation Round on the Access to Justice, Truth and Reparation for Women Victims and Survivors of Violence." This evolution towards a comprehensive automated system will allow the permanent compilation of updated information on indicators regarding legislation, access to justice, diversity, budgets, national action plans, information, and statistics.

After the States Parties share the requested information and the Committee of Experts carries out the evaluation phase, it will be possible to make the results available to the public. Consequently, the new Inter-American Regional Information System on Violence against Women will open a window for different civil society actors to access clear, reliable, and specific information on the countries’ public policies to prevent, eradicate and punish violence against women. Likewise, throughout the process, the MESECVI will work with civil society to encourage their participation through shadow reports.

The MESECVI and the Committee of Experts encourage the States Parties to participate in the IV Multilateral Evaluation Round actively and offer the necessary technical support to implement this new tool.

MESECVI is a systematic and permanent multilateral evaluation methodology that is based on exchange and technical cooperation between the States Party to the Convention and a Committee of Experts.
