Budget Vote!

Thu, Sept 6th,
11am - 7:30pm

Budget Information session:
Wed, Aug 15, 6:30pm:

Greetings from the Library Board!  Once again it is approaching time to vote on a budget for the library.  The Board continues to strive to balance the needs of the library with attention to current economic realities. In addition to funding the library’s day-to-day operations, it is essential that we plan for anticipated improvements as well as being prepared for unanticipated expenditures. Even including a modest pay increase for our beloved and experienced staff, the library is currently positioned to maintain fiscal security without seeking any budget increase.   Trustees will be available to answer questions about the budget at 6:30pm on Wednesday, August 15th at the library prior to the regularly scheduled Board meeting (usually the third Wednesday of the month at 7pm, and open to the public).

In addition to the budget vote, one provisional member of the Board, Amber Billey is seeking election, and two members, Carl Welden and Craig Zisman, are seeking re-election. There is also one seat still available.  Information about this vacancy can be found at the Library.

The proposed budget for 2019 is $307,925 including $304,125 from taxes, and the remainder from library revenues.  This represents a decrease over last year’s tax levy. The proposed tax rate is $0.5887 per $1000 of assessed property value.  This means that the owner of a property assessed at $100,000 would be paying a library tax of $58.87, a decrease of $2.71 per $1000 of assessed property value from 2018. If this proposed budget does not pass, we will automatically revert to last year’s budget, with a higher tax levy.

Absentee ballots will be available at the Library by August 17th and must be postmarked by September 4th or hand delivered to the library by September 5th.

The budget vote will be held on September 6th from 11am to 7:30pm and will take place at the library.  We hope you will continue to benefit from our library’s many offerings, and support these services by coming out to vote!  Thank you for your ongoing commitment.

Booksale a Big Success!

Thank you!

The Friends Annual Book Sale took place Sat., July 28 this year.  We had many happy shoppers.  Our profit was $1,215.

An event this big cannot happen without the help of many hardworking, people who are dedicated to the library.

A big THANK YOU to you all!
  • To Wendy and the staff for accepting, sorting and dealing with all the great donations.  To Andy for his expertise with the special books.
  • To Ed Redelberger our Wednesday volunteer, who takes care of our Book Cellar sale all year.  He also sorts and organizes donations for the Annual Sale.
  • To all of the Friends of the Rosendale Library for your work year round: to Miriam Patton who spent hours organizing the basement the days before the sale, to Mary Potratz who spent hours sorting books and cleaning, to all who came to set up the sale on Thursday and Friday evenings, and to all who worked shifts during the sale, and who helped to clean up afterward.
  • To Jim Wipf and his wonderfully strong helpers from Woodcrest who carried all books up and out of the basement before the sale. And to Peter Hinkey who came with strong people and a truck to carry away the remainders.
  • To my co-chairs, Mary Potratz , Joan Boris and Eileen Hall for their untiring energy.
  • To Essell Hoenshell-Watson, The Alternative Baker, who donated his yummy cakes for the volunteers.
  • And to all of our donors who give us great donations.
Without you we couldn’t have a sale!

Remember our book sale continues all year in our Book Cellar!

Writing Together in Open Space

We will work with writing prompts to draw out a focused event in each person’s life experience.  We will also work with creating a ‘found poem’ based on observation and imagination.  Participants will have a chance to share what they have written and receive feedback from the group and the instructor.

Here’s a note from the book:

ARTIST’S NOTE
Recently I kept a collage journal. Over a period of 8 months I made entries into a 4 x 6 inch black spiral sketch- book. Though the written notes and cut up images occasionally informed each other, there was no set structure. Rather, the construction of the collages was determined by the unlikely page size and weight of the paper. The images had to be simple. With words and images on alternating pages, what emerged felt like making notes with images and conversely, conjuring images with words. In laying out the book, the process of placing text and image was similar – occasionally one informed the other but more often, the image found its place visually, through its own story.

an illustrated presentation"

Wednesday, September 26
7PM/Free

Rosendale Community Center

During the last decade, Joseph Meehan served as expedition and documentary photographer for a groundbreaking study by Dr. Martin Nweeia concerning the extraordinary tusk of the Arctic Narwhal.  For centuries, myths and misconceptions have surrounded the purpose of its unique structure.
Meehan will take us on a visual journey through stunning landscapes of the High Canadian Arctic and Greenland. The presentation includes candid portraits of Inuit hunters whose knowledge reflects generations of survival in the north.
