Budget Vote:
Thu, Sept 5
11am-7:30pm
TOWN OF ROSENDALE VOTERS:
Greetings from the Rosendale Library Board of Trustees. It is again approaching time to finalize the library’s operating budget for the upcoming year. Being a special district library, Rosendale voters have the final say in approving our annual budgetary proposal.
The Board continually strives to balance our desire to be fiscally conservative with our commitment to improving and expanding our Library as a community partner. In addition, we also need to be prepared for periodic, as well as unanticipated expenditures. As a historic building, our library requires extra attention and care, and will have some structural issues to be addressed in the coming year.
Central to the Library is our staff. Long tenured, knowledgeable and dedicated to our patrons and this institution, they are truly the heart of the Rosendale Library. This year, long time Director, Wendy Alexander will receive a warm farewell as she hands over the reigns of leadership.
The proposed budget for 2020 is $325,425. The current year’s library budget of $307,925 included $304,125 raised through Town property taxes and reflects a tax rate of $0.5887per $1000 of a property‘s value. Therefore, the owner of a property with an assessed value of $100,000 paid a library tax of $58.87 in 2019. The proposed 2020 budget of $325,425 would include $320,475 raised through taxes and is a 5.4% increase over this year’s library tax levy. The $100,000 property owner would in 2020 have to pay $59.65, for the new tax rate would be $0.5965 per $1000 of assessed value, an increase of $0.78 for every 100,000 of assessed value.
In addition to voting on the budget, current trustee Beth King will be seeking re-election, interim trustee Sheila Brady seeks election for a full term, and Jacky Davis-Soman seeks to fill a new term for a trustee retiring at the end of this year.
Please support our library by utilizing its many offerings and coming out to vote.

The Library’s New Director
The Rosendale Library Board of Trustees is pleased to announce that Katie Scott-Childress will be joining the library in September as the new Director. Wendy Alexander has just retired after 42 years of service to the library and its community. Katie was the Director at Saugerties Public Library for the past two years and the Director of Olive Free Library for four and a half years before that. She earned her Master of Library Science degree at the University of Maryland. In addition to her background in library science, Katie was also the Deputy Director at the Women’s Studio Workshop here in Rosendale for three and a half years and has also held positions in design production, as a museum curator and as a college academic advisor.
As director of the Olive Free Library, Katie was brought on board to implement their ambitious long range plan that the board had adopted two years prior. Despite inheriting the long range plan which she had not developed, Katie was successful at meeting all of the goals including providing innovative programming for both children and adults, expanding cultural offerings, improving outreach and marketing to the community, expanding available technological resources, improving and enhancing the physical environment, and continuing collection development. According to a Past President of the Olive Free Library Board of Trustees, “Katie’s legacy at the library continues in the many programs and resources she initiated during her tenure.”
We are thrilled that Katie Scott-Childress will bring her knowledge and passion to our library. Please stop in after September 15 to welcome her.

The Storyteller's Secret
by Sejal Badani
An epic story of the unrelenting force of love, the power of healing, and the invincible desire to dream. Nothing prepares Jaya, a New York journalist, for the heartbreak of her third miscarriage and the slow unraveling of her marriage in its wake. Desperate to assuage her deep anguish, she decides to go to India to uncover answers to her family’s past.
Intoxicated by the sights, smells, and sounds she experiences, Jaya becomes an eager student of the culture. But it is Ravi—her grandmother’s former servant and trusted confidant—who reveals the resilience, struggles, secret love, and tragic fall of Jaya’s pioneering grandmother during the British occupation. Through her courageous grandmother’s arrestingly romantic and heart-wrenching story, Jaya discovers the legacy bequeathed to her and a strength that, until now, she never knew was possible.
