Katie's Corner

We miss seeing people at the library without masks on! To appreciate the season, and one another’s company safely, we have begun a weekly walking club. One of our staff will lead each week. For the month of October, we will be meeting at the Willow Kiln Park behind the Rosendale Theatre, rain or shine. Dates and times are on our website.

We know many people are missing browsing the new books shelf in the library (understandably so!) We have created a way for you to browse virtually on our website, and you can subscribe to the “New Books at Rosendale Library” newsletter that provides a brief description of each book. There are also: “Coming Soon to Rosendale,” “Kids Books at Rosendale,” and “New DVDs at Rosendale” newsletters. To subscribe follow this link.  And don’t forget that you can check out magazines, like the New Yorker, at the library, as well as access a huge selection online through our website.

We are happy to see folks coming to fill out absentee ballot applications for the library’s October 8 trustee election and budget vote. Absentee applications are also available on our website. If you would like to participate and are not registered to vote, we have voter registration forms at the library. October 9th is the last day to register to vote in the November federal and state election. We have also created a link to the Vote411 page on our website where you can find out about all the candidates in the upcoming election.

During the month of October, the Rosendale Library will be participating in a Food Fight. This is a friendly competition between Ulster County libraries to collect as much food as possible for local food pantries. The library will be collecting non-perishable, non-expired food items for the Rosendale Food Pantry during library open hours in a bin outside the front door. (Personal hygiene items such as diapers and tampons are also needed.) This is part of a national Great Give Back library partnership initiative.

Medicare open enrollment period begins October 15 and the library is promoting one-on-one consultations from the Office for the Aging, and a series of online webinars that residents can enroll on the library’s website.

The 2020 Census deadline has been extended until October 31. So far, in Rosendale, 63.5% of households have filled out the census. If you or someone you know has two residences, here’s what the Census Bureau says about it: “for a vacation home or second home, it would be quite helpful to the Census Bureau if you would respond to the census survey indicating that zero people were living there on April 1, 2020. By reporting to the Census Bureau that an address is a second or vacation home, the Census Bureau can avoid sending an enumerator to that home to verify that it is vacant.” We are installing a tablet outside the library so people can fill out the census easily. Let’s get Rosendale 100% counted!

Finally, please take our patron satisfaction survey. We want to hear from as many people as possible so we can continue to improve the services we offer.

This is a season of dramatic change and beauty in what feels like a fragile point in history. Let’s take care of our health and of each other, we are all we’ve got.

-Katie

Local Park and Museum Passes

Rosendale patrons can now check out free passes for the Mohonk Preserve, Minnewaska and state parks (Empire pass), and the Hudson River Maritime Museum.
The Mohonk Preserve has generously donated 4 passes for library patrons.  The preserve provides visitors access to over 8,000 acres- including cliffs, forests, fields, ponds and streams- and to over 65 miles of carriage roads and trails for hiking, running, mountain biking, horseback riding and cross-country skiing.
The Empire pass allows one car entrance to most of the NY State parks, DEC forest preserve areas, boat launch sites, arboretums and park preserves, including of course, Minnewaska State Park.
The Hudson River Maritime Museum is located at 50 Rondout Landing in Kingston.  It is open 12-5pm Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Check out their great website at www.hrmm.org .
These passes may be reserved in advance by calling or coming into the library.  In order to serve as many patrons as possible, multiple date reservations are not accepted, only one reservation per library card holder may be made at a time.  Rosendale Library patrons may check out a pass for 3 days.  The pass must be returned to the Rosendale Library.  Overdue fines are $25 per day.  Patrons must pick up the reserved pass by closing time of the first day of their reservation.  If the pass is not picked up by closing time, the library may check it out to another patron.
Thanks to the Friends of Rosendale Library for purchasing the Empire pass and the Hudson River Maritime Museum passes.

The Friends of the Library held a socially distant, outdoor book discussion of the book, The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek, on September 13th.

Annual Appeal for Support

We just mailed out our annual appeal for active members and donors. Due to the pandemic restrictions, we have been unable to have our usual book sales and Book Adoption Days which are our main source of income. We are still funding many library improvements and the Summer Reading Program. The past 12 months we have funded $5500 for computers, routers, software, etc., three $1000 scholarships to graduating seniors, Empire passes and Museum passes for loan and over $9500 for the current renovations. As you can see your previous financial support was very valuable. Please consider a special donation this year and accept our gratitude for your ongoing, generous support.
