Library rally in the Well of the Legislative building.

Library Advocacy Day

From left to right: Katie Scott-Childress, Eileen Meltzer, Eileen Hall, Rose Unes.

On February 25th, two Friends of the Library, Eileen Hall and Eileen Melzer, Library Trustee Rose Unes, and I braved the cold and wind to travel to Albany for Library Advocacy Day. We visited our state assemblyman, Kevin Cahill, and our state senator, Rosendale’s own, Jen Metzger.  Together with other library advocates from across the state, we urged our representatives to fight to restore funds for libraries and library construction, which were deeply cut in the governor’s proposed budget. Our library system relies heavily on state funding, and we could not obtain books from other libraries without the system’s infrastructure. In addition, we use the library system’s tech support department for all of our IT support. Along with many other libraries, our building is old and we will eventually need to apply for state library construction funds, which have been cut back steadily over the years. Both Cahill and Metzger are strong library supporters and vowed to fight for funding to support libraries.

In other news, April 1 is census day! People will be able to fill out the census online, and the library will have a dedicated laptop for people filling out the census. Our staff is available to help anyone needing assistance completing the census. Let’s all work together to make sure everyone gets counted in Rosendale.

There will be a feeding circle starting on Thursday, March 5, at 11 a.m., and continuing bi-weekly. This will be a supportive group for parents with infants (just following the story hour program). This group will be led by an enthusiastic story hour parent. We have many new picture books and colorful new blocks in our children’s area that are very popular.

D&H Canal: 19th Century Engine of Prosperity

The building of the Delaware & Hudson Canal and its impact on the region will be the subject of a presentation by Bill Merchant of the D&H Canal Historical Society.

In our present era, it's hard to imagine that in the early 1820s it was easier to dig a canal for mule-drawn barges than to build a serviceable road to get products to market. This program highlights the challenges of  early transportation and of the people who were involved in its construction.

The Anna Mae Auchmoedy / Lottie Burns Scholarship 2020

The Matthew C. Bowen Memorial Scholarships

Every Spring the Friends of the Rosendale Library give a scholarship to a graduating high school senior.  This year there are three awards being given.  Each award is $1,000.  The money is to be used for college expenses, books, etc.  Students from Rondout Valley, Kingston and New Paltz high schools who live in the Rosendale Library district may apply.
Applications have been sent to the above high school guidance offices and to the Rosendale Youth Center.  They are also available at the Rosendale Library desk.

The deadline for submissions is March 13.  Please bring completed applications to the library or mail to:

          Rosendale, NY  12472
Winners will be notified by April 30.

Anna Mae Auchmoedy was the woman we have to thank for the original idea of the Rosendale Library.  Anna Mae and the Comus Club of Rosendale started our library in 1940.  The Women’s Club of Rosendale was key in promoting and supporting our young library.   Lottie Burns worked very closely with Anna Mae for many years.

Eric Bowen has funded two scholarships in memory of his son Matthew C. Bowen.  Matthew had many interests, he was an avid reader and cyclist.
