Summer Reading Report

What a summer we had at the Rosendale Library!  We certainly did our part of, "Building a Better World Through Reading."  This year we had more children of school age registered for our Summer Reading Program, 27 to be exact and 10 preschoolers.  The children read 459 books and read for 8,169 minutes in all.  And those are the children who actually turned in their logs.  Many had the opportunity to go 'shopping' in our treasure chest for prizes. Eight children read 500 minutes each and were featured on our Wall of Fame at the library.  Next year we will go for 10,000 minutes.  Bravo for the children of Rosendale!

"Building the Ashokan Reservoir- a History"
Frank Almquist, Historian

In 1913, the Olivebridge Dam was sealed.  It created the reservoir which provides New York City with up to 40 percent of its fresh water.  The story begins in 1899, when surveyors chose the site along the Esopus Creek.  But it was also home to more than 2,300 residents.  Almquist describes the engineering feat of the century using modern techniques and local material, and how the building of the Ashokan Reservoir impacted its engineers, workers and residents.

The Friends of the Rosendale Library invite you to a

Book Discussion

The Same Sky

by Amanda Eyre

The Friends of the Rosendale Library invite you to a Book Discussion about The Same Sky by Amanda Eyre Ward. A beautiful and heartrending novel about motherhood, resilience, and faith—a ripped-from-the-headlines story of two families on both sides of the American border. Alice and her husband, Jake, own a barbecue restaurant in Austin, Texas. Hardworking and popular in their community, they have a loving marriage and thriving business, but Alice still feels that something is missing, lying just beyond reach.  Carla is a strong-willed young girl who’s had to grow up fast, acting as caretaker to her six-year-old brother Junior. Years ago, her mother left the family behind in Honduras to make the arduous, illegal journey to Texas. But when Carla’s grandmother dies and violence in the city escalates, Carla takes fate into her own hands—and with Junior, she joins the thousands of children making their way across Mexico to America, facing great peril for the chance at a better life. The lives of Alice and Carla will intersect in a profound and surprising way. Poignant and arresting, The Same Sky is about finding courage through struggle, hope amid heartache, and summoning the strength—no matter what dangers await—to find the place where you belong.

Can You Help?

The Friends of Rosendale Library have a very active book sale in our library Bookcellar.  We are receiving many donations from our generous patrons.  We are looking for a volunteer who can come in regularly to help move donations down to the Bookcellar and help organize and sort them for the shelves.  This wonderful person would also be asked to pull some of the older books on the bookcellar shelves and take them to the Salvation Army and would work with our longtime volunteer, Ed, who helps in the Bookcellar.
