Katie's Corner
Our annual budget vote and trustee election will be a month later than usual this year because of a state executive order that moved special district elections to after September 15th. The election will be on Thursday, October 8, from noon to 7:00 p.m. There are two open seats, both for a partial term that ends December 31, 2021. The last day to hand in nomination petitions to the library is September 8, and they must have the signatures of at least 18 people registered to vote in Rosendale. If you are interested in serving on the board, please call the library to request a petition or to learn more about what is involved in serving on the board.
The library’s tax appropriation will be slightly lower than it was last year. Last year’s tax levy was $320,475. This year’s tax appropriation being requested is $320,000. We are doing all we can to hold down costs during this difficult economic time. The Friends of the Library have stepped up tremendously this year to help fund building renovations and have committed to help support the library with donations next year. The board is planning further renovations to make the library more accessible, and has been saving capital reserve funds over many years to make that possible. A copy of the budget can be found on our website.
We love hearing from you, especially via our patron satisfaction survey. Some patrons said they wished we subscribed to the New Yorker magazine. We heard you, and our first issue just arrived! All of our magazines can be checked out for one week. If you feel inclined, please send me an email about which of our magazines you really value, or which magazines you wish we had instead because many of the subscriptions are due to renew soon.
We have lots of new books coming into the library all the time. We are starting a virtual “new books shelf” on our website where you can browse the latest arrivals. Here’s a pro tip for getting your hands on popular books. When you place a hold on a book that we own, even if there are 100 people waiting for the book systemwide, you will jump to the front of the line to get our copy right away if you are the first Rosendale patron requesting the title.
We are planning programs for the fall (alas, they will almost certainly all be online). Let us know what would make a difference to you. We are lining up a memoir writing class, job hunting sessions, and we are trying to find someone to lead a genealogy workshop (if you know someone who is good at this, please have them be in touch).
Happy end of summer. Don’t forget to turn in your summer reading bingo cards!

Summer Reading Program!
Our Summer Reading program is drawing to a close. All reading bingo cards are due Monday, August 31. When you turn in your bingo card and reading logs you will receive a coupon for an ice cream cone from Stewarts.
We will be tallying up the number of books read by all of our kids, teens and adults. When we have all the logs we will have a virtual raffle for some great prizes!
Our Story Walk at the Willow Kiln Park will be up until the end of September. Stop by and read this beautiful book as you enjoy a walk. Contact the library when you are finished for an ice cream cone coupon from Stewarts.
We hope you all enjoyed our Summer Reading challenges. Here is an excerpt from one of our adult summer reading participants:
“Thank you for a great challenge! It was especially fun and educational to investigate the books published in my birth year, and I loved re-reading one of my favorite books. (There were many more after that one.) This was a wonderful way to frame my reading.”
We look forward to seeing you in our parking lot, or on the zoom screen, and keep on reading!

A Great Friend of the Library
Friend of the library Molly Swartz has come up with a terrific way to help a Rosendale business and the Rosendale Library at the same time. She is committing to buying a book a month at Postmark Books to donate to the library. She will help us build our collection of new books, and help keep a beloved shop in business.
Bravo Molly! Everyone in our library community thanks you.
