Firetowers of the Catskills:

Their History and Lore

Wed, Oct. 22 at 7 PM
FREE

The Rosendale Library presents “Firetowers of the Catskills: Their History and Lore" by Marty Podskoch, author and columnist.
During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, fires raged out of control in many of NY State’s vast wooded areas.  As a result of the devastation, in 1909 the first state fire towers were established in the Catskills- made of trees and logs. Learn the story of these beloved icons, the people who manned them, and the fight to preserve them.
Marty Podskoch is a retired teacher and author of six books about the Catskill and Adirondack Mountains. He lives in Delhi.

Book Discussion

October 26th 2pm

Books available at Circulation Desk

The Friends of the Rosendale Library will be sponsoring a discussion of the book, Crow Lake by Mary Lawson on Sunday, October 26th at the Library at 2:00pm.  The books are currently available for loan at the library.

"Here is a gorgeous, slow-burning story set in the rural “badlands” of northern Ontario, where heartbreak and hardship are mirrored in the landscape. For the farming Pye family, life is a Greek tragedy where the sins of the fathers are visited on the sons, and terrible events occur—offstage.

Centerstage are the Morrisons, whose tragedy looks more immediate if less brutal, but is, in reality, insidious and divisive. Orphaned young, Kate Morrison was her older brother Matt’s protegee, her fascination for pond life fed by his passionate interest in the natural world. Now a zoologist, she can identify organisms under a microscope but seems blind to the state of her own emotional life. And she thinks she’s outgrown her siblings—Luke, Matt, and Bo—who were once her entire world.

In this universal drama of family love and misunderstandings, of resentments harbored and driven underground, Lawson ratchets up the tension with heartbreaking humor and consummate control, continually overturning one’s expectations right to the very end. Tragic, funny, unforgettable, Crow Lake is a quiet tour de force that will catapult Mary Lawson to the forefront of fiction writers today." - publisher's overview

We hope that you will join us for an afternoon of sharing our thoughts on this engaging and interesting story.

Rosendale Library Wishlist

  • Do you have an hour or two once a month?  The Friends of Rosendale Library are looking for help with the ‘Friends’ page of the Rosendale Library website:
    http://www.rosendalelibrary.org/allfiles/friends.html
About once a month we need to update this webpage.  An updated ‘Friends’ page will allow the Friends group to communicate better with our patrons and help this volunteer group to grow.
  • Do you have some clean, dry storage space that you would allow us to store books in temporarily?  We receive many wonderful donated books from our very generous patrons.  We keep some for the library collection and we sell or donate the rest.  Our office space is very crowded when we are evaluating donated books.  What we need is a place to temporarily store some of the better books until a book dealer could help us to sell them.
  • Do you know of a book dealer that would volunteer an hour a month to help us sell some of the better donations?
Please contact Ann Sarrantonio at 658-9013 or rosendalelibrary@hvi.net for more information. Thank you for considering spending some time to help your Rosendale Library!

Alert: Help needed!

The Friends group needs some new active members to support library programs, activities and its future. Our next meeting is Saturday, November 22, 10am at the Rosendale Cafe on Main Street. Your help could support current plans or share new ideas for programs or fund raising. The library 2015 budget has a very small increase over the 2014 budget. This is good news for local taxpayers but may require the Friends to step up and help with special projects again next year. Please consider joining us or the Library Board of Trustees to help ensure the future of OUR LIBRARY.
Thank you!
