Budget Vote:

Thu, Sept 5

Greetings from the Rosendale Library Board of Trustees.   It is again approaching time to finalize the library’s operating budget for the upcoming year. Being a special district library, Rosendale voters have the final say in approving our annual budgetary proposal.
The Board continually strives to balance our desire to be fiscally conservative with our commitment to improving and expanding our Library as a community partner.  In addition, we also need to be prepared for periodic, as well as unanticipated expenditures.  As a historic building, our library requires extra attention and care, and will have some structural issues to be addressed in the coming year.
Central to the Library is our staff.  Long tenured, knowledgeable and dedicated to our patrons and this institution, they are truly the heart of the Rosendale Library. This year, long time Director, Wendy Alexander will receive a warm farewell as she hands over the reigns of leadership.  Candidates for a new Director are in the interview process.
The proposed budget for 2020 is $325,425.  The current year’s library budget of $307,925 included $304,125 raised through Town property taxes and reflects a tax rate of $0.5887per $1000 of a property‘s value.  Therefore, the owner of a property with an assessed value of $100,000 paid a library tax of $58.87 in 2019.  The proposed 2020 budget of $325,425 would include $320,475 raised through taxes and is a 5.4% increase over this year’s library tax levy.  The $100,000 property owner would in 2020 have to pay $59.65, for the new tax rate would be $0.5965 per $1000 of assessed value, an increase of $0.78 for every 100,000 of assessed value.
Board members will be available to participate in an informational session regarding the proposed budget held for the public at the Rosendale Library at 6:30pm on August 21st.
In addition to voting on the budget, current trustee Beth King will be seeking re-election, interim trustee Sheila Brady seeks election for a full term, and Jacky Davis-Soman seeks to fill a new term for a trustee retiring at the end of this year.
Please support our library by utilizing its many offerings and coming out to vote.
11:00 AM TO 7:30 PM

  Thank You!

On behalf of the Rosendale Library staff, Board of Trustees, Friends group and its loyal patrons, we would like to wish Wendy Alexander a very deserving congratulations on her upcoming retirement. Wendy has been the director of the Rosendale Library for the last 42 years. She joined the library in April 1977 as its first certified librarian, which made it possible for the library to receive its Absolute Charter granted by the Board of Regents of the State of New York. Over the years, Rosendale Library has maintained its place at the heart of our small but vibrant community. Wendy has been instrumental in helping the library serve its community and in creating many new generations of readers. Wendy’s last day of work will be on Thursday, August 22 so please stop by this month to offer her your congratulations.

“Wendy Alexander has made my 10 year tenure on the Rosendale Library Board of Trustees a thought-provoking and sometimes exciting experience. She has shared her extensive knowledge of the library's history with us over many years, and takes with her into retirement our grateful thanks and appreciation.”
Cherilyn Craig, President
Rosendale Library Board of Trustees

“Serving on the Board of Trustees these past three years has truly deepened my appreciation for the vital role that the library staff and the director play. It is amazing to glance behind the scenes to see what it takes to run a small town library in an historic building. It is a constant juggling act that involves balancing the library and its community’s current needs while advocating and planning for the future. I admire Wendy’s 42 years of dedication to the Rosendale Library. Thank you for your loyal service, Wendy.”
Beth King, Vice PresidentRosendale Board of Trustees

Friends Scholarship Raffle!

The Friends of Rosendale Library (FRL) are dedicated to the enrichment and quality of our most precious resources, the children, the next generation.  To achieve this goal the FRL have been offering a scholarship to a deserving high school student bound for college each Spring.

For many years the Friends have generated the funds through a raffle with the support of Rosendale merchants, patrons and families.  This year Judith Minissali had generously donated $1,500 in honor of her husband, F Stop Fitzgerald and his love of children.  We are sincerely grateful for this family’s gift and their continued commitment to our town.

As a result there will be no raffle needed this year to fund our scholarship.  However, donations will always be accepted for this worthy cause.

Little Free Library Update
"Take a book... Share a book"

We hope you have all had a chance to visit our new Little Free Library. This adorable gem was engineered, designed and built by our very own neighbor, Joe Boris.
Located at the entrance to The Community Center, the foot traffic of people going to the pool and playground has been terrific.

Not only is our Little Free Library designed to resemble our very own Rosendale Library, complete with solar lighting but it has a suggestion/request box. Kids write the most adorable notes including:    “Can I have Harry Potter book, please” and “More Babysitter Club books!” We enjoy these requests and hope all the community continue to enjoy this new addition to our Rosendale charm.
